Good morning! So, I am currently in the first year of the United States Army National Guard contract, and I understand that if I am admitted to USAFA, I will need to be released from National Guard. Has anyone done this before? How hard is it to be released from the contract, and are there consequences?

Hmmm - If it were Air National Guard you would apply through LEAD just like other active duty Airmen (https://www.academyadmissions.com/prepare/enlisted/), but I don't know about Army. Maybe someone will chime in here with more knowledge than me, but you could try calling the USAFA LEAD program to see what they say (number at the link I posted).

My guess is that it is like every other part of the military - how hard it is to get released from the contract will depend on how in demand your career field is. If it is critically manned, it will likely be pretty tough, but if not, chances are it won't be too challenging. I highly doubt there are any true consequences - but I'm not sure what you mean by that.

My cadre during basic did this, I remember him saying how he didn’t sign any paperwork, they kinda just forgot about him and didn’t make him sign any release paperwork, but you technically have to.

he said that an appointment to a service academy supersedes any previous contract you have with the military, but if you drop out of usafa you have to finish your enlisted contract.

My cadre is also a direct from high school, he did basic during the summer of his junior year when he was 17.
