Today is the 121st birthday of the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps which originated with a 1898 law signed by President William McKinley. The Hospital Corps is the only enlisted Corps in the US Navy. We are over 30,000 strong in active duty numbers making us the largest rating in the Navy. I was once the head of training and education for the operational medical NECs and the liaison and medical advisor to the Marine Corps when that billet was at BUMED. My view from that perch put me even more in awe of the incredible men and women I called colleagues. Navy Corpsmen are among the most decorated groups in all the world's militaries.
Navy Corpsmen have:
Medal of Honor recipients-23
Navy Cross recipients-174
Distinguished Service Cross form the Army-31
Silver Star-946
Bronze Star with V-1582
Ships named after Corpsmen-21
Around the world this week commands are celebrating our birthday with balls, cake cutting, and speeches. I miss the fun, the people, and the deployments but am happy I'm not putting on the uniform for these things, so I'll just say Happy Birthday from my keyboard.
