Hello - Since 1st grade , my DD had her heart set on attending the Service Academies. Recently, she took her CFA during USNA Summer Seminar and passed. The four categories where her scores are below USAFA's average are in Pull ups, Shuttle run, Push ups and Mile run. Her scores are below.

BB throw: 60
Pull ups: 2
Shuttle: 9.7
Push ups: 35
Sit ups: 83
Mile run: 7:53

Will her Pull ups, Shuttle run, Push ups, and Mile run scores meet the minimum for USAFA CFA?

The CFA is a small part of the whole candidate evaluation. It could be a discriminator for close applicants. With that said, if the other areas of leadership, academics and athletics are great, this should not be a problem. Remember, Summer Seminars are generally considered diagnostic. Your DD has until her deadline (maybe October) to improve in her weak areas and retake the test.

Best of Luck to your DD on this journey. It is a wild ride but worth it. My DS is just starting the adventure but is enjoying it so far.

Thank you for your input LtBob87. She is mainly concerned with her push up scores and 1 mile run. With so many other to-do items on the application, she was hoping to submit her USNA CFA scores to USAFA and then get the CFA out of the way, but was unsure if she should do it. Do you know what were your DD scores for push ups and mile run?

I went to NASS as well and one of my squad mates was only able to get one pull-up as a male and he still passed his CFA (or so he says, avg is like 10-11). A girl squadmate of mine got slightly less competitive scores than your daughter and passed as well. I hope this helps in some way, if she is really unsatisfied with her score it's comforting to know you can always take it again and always submit new scores.

My DS and I did some playing around with the attached website. These people make money by prepping candidates for the academies so they can’t be too far off.

This calculator does not even reference the CFA so I would assume that goes into the panel score. Other service academies have it weighted about 10%.

My DS was never much of a runner since he always played football. After BCT, he ran a 9:40 mile and a half. That is for flying for him. That is even more impressive at 7200 feet for a gulf coast resident.

Thanks for the input hochwaldevan. Hopefully, both you and my DD will get admitted to the upcoming year Academy.

Hi Hopefull2022 - thanks for the message. So you had similar scores and passed USAFA CFA? Would you happen to remember your push ups and mile time scores?

Scores are around the averages, maybe a little low. Good enough to pass, but never be satisfied with a CFA score if you have the time/opportunity to improve.

Let's remember that the CFA is only a part of the application. If a candidate excels in some areas but did below average on the CFA, he/she might still be competitive. On the other end of the spectrum, an IC athlete might do really well on the CFA, but have a GPA that is below average and still be competitive. Although many will try to "chance me," just do the absolute best you can, and then you've done all you can.

Best of luck!

Thank you Crymsonwynters and Peter2025 for your comment and input. My DD requested USNA to submit her scores to USAFA so we will wait and see. I'll update post once she hears back from USAFA.
