A Letter of Assurance (LOA) is a form of early notification that some candidates receive in the fall semester if their applications indicate that they are a highly qualified candidate but whose senators/representatives have not yet made nominations. From the Academy Admissions website, they explain the LOA as follows:

"EARLY NOTIFICATION
If you are a highly qualified candidate, have a nomination and your records are complete, we may notify you of an appointment as early as November. If you don’t yet have a nomination, we’ll send you a letter of assurance. As soon as you receive your nomination, you’ll receive an appointment. "

DS received an e-mail from his congressman today. Didn't say if he would receive an appointment but wanted to offer him an opportunity for an Army ROTC scholarship. Since West Point was his second choice, he is on cloud 9 on one hand but still waiting to hear from the AF as that is his first choice. I don't know why but we hadn't even considered this as an option till now. Still hoping to hear from USAF....

Was the offer of Army ROTC scholarship out of the blue (i.e. didn't apply for one)? If so, I wasn't aware that could happen. Congratulations to your DS!!

Complete surprise to us all! He is a candidate for both USAFA w/ nomination and USMA w/o nomination. This was a complete surprise, so now I'm scouring the ROTC thread...
 
ROTC is a great option B and for some a great option A.
DS Received 3/19: the process is not over so please be patient. The Alternate list is still a possibility.
Note: the admissions office will upload either; 1 letter of appointment, 2. Assurance, 3. Rejection. Each candidate receives one of these once the process is closed.
If AFA is your first choice, hang in there.
 
@The4wills - did DS rec something this week via email regarding AROTC results? I know they are meeting this week but am thinking it’s too early for results... so just checking

No. I've seen the email. It says they are still in selections.

I've noticed several post mentions regarding emails to liaisons, admissions, etc. to ascertain appointment possibilities. Is this wise? If selections are still ongoing, should DS just wait it out without contacting? Thanks

Congratulations to all those who have received appointments!

I have a question related to inquiring of admissions and/or liaison officers at this time - and certainly in deference to not flooding them with the constant, "where am I at in this process" type of emails. But, I am wondering if it makes any difference to send an update now that my son has concluded his senior season of high school wrestling. He took second at the state tournament and has received several other athletic and academic awards throughout the season. If these items could have been reported earlier when he submitted his application they could have potentially increased his WCS. But, I certainly wouldn't want to bombard folks with more emails if it won't really make a difference at this point.

(By the way, my son sent an email to his admissions POC and liaison officer in February with an update to his senior schedule for spring semester, which I thought was a requirement since there was a change from what he submitted with his application. He received a one word response from admissions ("Ok.") so not sure how to interpret that.)

We can continue to patiently wait, but don't want to leave anything on the table if it could help his application. On the flip side, we but don't want to annoy those who are making decisions... what to do?
