Hi all. I received that godforsaken email and letter this morning about how I am not receiving an offer of Direct Appointment or the Prep offers. But what I am confused about is that they said they are working on prep offers up into May, so how does that work? How can they tell people now that they will not be offered prep if it isn't done?

And for the record, I am asking this just so i have more knowledge of the application cycle for next year. I am well aware I am done for for this cycle, this is not one of those "maybe there's still hope I can't accept the truth" posts.

Thanks!

I presume they made note of that only because current offers will be accepted or denied, thus changing class sizes. They may still send out Prep or FS offers as they deem fit, but I highly doubt they will from here out.

The result may be drastic reversals from "Non-Select" status for some, but who knows.

In a world of limited seats to offer, the admissions team is working through a high number of applicants. They sort them into the APPOINT direct, APPOINT Prep, NO, and the Maybe piles. Their goal is to let the NO group know as soon as possible to afford them the best opportunity to pursue other opportunities. Some will have offers to other SA and this helps solidify that decision. Others are considering schools with deposits coming due. The goal is to give you as much time as possible to move on to the next phase.

As for the MAYBE group, they are on the bubble and the school wants to see how the responses come back for appointment offers already extended. The funnel continues to shrink as notifications go out, but the school is aiming to maximize the class yield and this means there is a group that is still in play and could continue in the process up until the report date for BCT.

For the people that are in the "Maybe group", what would today have looked like for them? Would it have just said no offer of Direct Appointment and made no mention of prep, vice versa, etc? No notification at all? Thanks in advance!

I am not a candidate in that category, so I cannot speak to it with any certainty. I suspect those waking up to a status that says Candidate means they are still in the race.

To those who awoke to a TWE, I know the feeling. It is a hard pill to swallow after years of sacrifice and all efforts laser focused on the goal of receiving a Service Academy appointment. You "do the right things" and try to follow the recipe of those who went before you and are left scratching your head wondering why not me... Trust that you have not been led astray. Your actions have put you in a position for great things to happen - whether that be at a Service Academy, self-prepping for next year, or onto other college adventures and paths to a common outcome of serving our country in the finest military force in the world. Remember why you started this crazy roller coaster in the first place.

Great advice about remembering why someone starts on this rollercoaster. Any advice to someone who wants to reapply next year? All the generic advice in the 'regret to inform you letter' is already accomplished - good grades, captain of two athletic teams, Calc I and II concurrent college courses taken, 1450 SAT, etc. In addition, two parents are grads. I wonder what can be done to make another, stronger, run for next year? Can you move to a less competitive area of the country your freshman year of college before you reapply?

A move sounds extreme, but I have considered it myself for my own kids. My suggestion would be to start with the admissions counselor after the start of BCT. As an ALO - we don't have visibility into the "why" behind a non-select. Your goal is to understand the perceived deficiencies and then improve, and I think within the right context and at the right time - insiders within the admissions department would be open to discussing the candidate profile. I would suggest that the candidate call and do the talking.

USCGA is obviously a smaller school, but their Dir of Admissions applied 3 times before getting in and because of his journey, he offers 15min calls to each non-select to discuss the "why" behind their situation. Clearly, that is special and likely only to last while this individual is in the role, but wow -- my mind was blown that there was even an offer from a senior official within admissions to have a 1-on-1 with any applicant that wanted to know why they were not selected and how they could improve if they chose to apply again.

Frankly, for the level of effort that goes into a SA application, I think it is a very respectful way to end the process and bring closure to all of us who encounter situations like yours and are dumbfounded behind the reasoning.

My DS had almost the same stats, as well as third world service and captain of clubs. Both my husband and I attended USAFA. Last year after his TWE, we were blown away and scrambled to find a plan B. His plan B was to attend a University, excel in engineering and AFROTC, and reapply. He did and was appointed to this year’s class of 2024. He grew and learned so much this year, and we are so grateful that he’ll be heading into USAFA a little older and wiser. Feel free to DM me if you have questions of specifics...we’ve been there and felt your pain!

I tried sending you a message but I think you need two more posts before I can?
