One of the Coast Guard's newest cutters, USCGC BERTHOLF, is on Mighty Ships right now on the Smithsonian channel. Nicely done. Makes my VIG looks like a sad old toy!

Icebreakers are 20+ years old. BERTHOLF is a national security cutter.

LITS what's VIG? I'm guessing some type of navigation equipment?

Heck no, 76mm are ancient! That 57mm is outstanding. The Navy's LCSs have the same gun.

Lits the 76 is all I knew, I'm ancient now you go with what you know.
I will take your word and of course do a little research.

The 57mm is state-of-the-art.

If it makes you feel any better, the 25mm is all I knew and that was typically...

BOOM BOOM BOOM ... [MISFIRE!]......................BOOM BOOOM ......... [MISFIRE!]...........

The GMs I've talked to are big fans of the 57mm. I never heard many people bragging about the 76mm (or CWIS for that matter).

I guess real ancient is the 3 inch guns though. I assume the 3in on a 378' is before your time.

We pulled into Charleston one time, and went by a CG cutter that was a museum. Imagine the difficulty our EO had when we found out he was a fireman on that museum.

Three inch MK75 was my time on a Navy frigate. Decent gun and the Phalanx
CIWS anti-ship missile system also did its job well.

That 57 MK3 gun has a tremendous rate of fire and range. You are right it is the deck gun for todays NSC or LCS ship.

Does anyone know where I can watch this online? Not much of an opportunity to see it on tv here in Chase.

So do you think an NSC would be a good cutter to go to as an Ensign, LITS?

As long as you're going to one that's been launched and commissioned, sure. I've heard very good things. Early cutters in any class will have issues. Those issues are ironed out more and more as more cutters come across the line. Can't beat the berthing situation, and it's "high speed low drag".

I say go for it.

Bertholf's CIWS is a must weapon system in today's world.

Ha, I'm pretty sure the 76mm video I found was some central american navy...they were slow. I've never been on a 378 or 270 to see them fire the 76mm, but I seen plenty of 25mm shoots, and it was not impressive.
