DS got a call from our congressman yesterday afternoon congratulating him on his appointments to the Merchant Marine Academy and to West Point. DS told the congressman that he knew about USMMA but had not heard anything from West Point. The congressmen then said that he would double check, just to be sure, and call him back. Ten minutes later the congressman called back and confirmed that he definitely has an appointment to West Point and should be contacted by the academy tomorrow (today).

This is beyond AWESOME!!!

The good people.......no, scratch that.......GREAT people on this forum have been such a huge help to my DS this last year! So many of you have been so generous with your time, knowledge and experience that I don't even know how to begin to thank you! I guess the best thing that I can do is to continue visiting this forum, with regularity, and offer my help to those who are new to this experience. I'm far from a "salty dog" when it comes to academy admissions, but now having been through this process to a successful end, I can at least be an encouragement, as well as an advisor, to those who will be where I was a year ago.

Oh, and one more thing. My DS is a homeschool kid from start to finish! For those homeschool boys and girls out there that worry that the U.S. Service Academies won't take you seriously, well, think again! My DS is far from the first homeschooler to earn a spot in one of our fantastic and prestigious service academies, and you can bet your bottom dollar that he won't be the last. Just gird up your loins (Biblical reference) and get busy! You'll probably have to do some extra work to demonstrate your worth because the academy admission system is structured around a traditional educational structure, but they will work with you, and they will give you a fair shake. The academies have been admitting homeschoolers for decades; they definitely know what they're doing. I'm here for anyone who needs my help, homeschoolers and all others as well.

Congratulations to you and your son! I've often wondered if the academies are fair to those candidates that are homeschooled, that's wonderful news and I'm sure you are incredibly proud!

DD missed the call from our Senator last night by a minute. But he left a lovely voicemail, which she can now share with others! So excited for her, this has been her goal since the beginning of high school! Thank you for all your advice, this forum is such a wealth of knowledge. We should probably begin a thread for homeschool families...we have a DS graduating from WP in May and our second son received a 2023 appointment yesterday. It is certainly a small group, especially at WP, but I’m sure it is growing and the path is much more unique towards building a competitive file

I think that's an excellent idea! I have another DS that'll be starting his SA quest for the Class of 2026. I know things will be much easier for DS2 (although still hard), having been through everything with DS1. There were lots of terrific people that helped us, but there were a few homeschool parents that were especially helpful. I'd like very much to pay it forward.
