I apologize for the lengthy post, however I need some information to understand my disposition with my West Point application. I was medically disqualified about a week ago before I went to my remedial eye examination. I had my eye examination yesterday (5FEB) and now I am waiting for DODMERB to get back to me. I received a letter in the mail that stated I was not medically qualified to attend USMA, however, if I where to obtain a slot that they would request a waiver. Now I am concerned about my competitiveness to USMA because of this situation. I have fallen under the influence that I am a competitive candidate due to my LOE and other such correspondence.

Any information that would help me understand this situation would be much appreciated. I will reply as soon as possible.

Waiting for DoDMERB to get back to you for an eye exam you took yesterday.......

Comply with the DoDMERB thread “FAST”

Sir, as West Point has stated in the letter, it seems that even though I took this remedial eye examination that I will still be medically disqualified and I am not sure if that is the case or not.

Ok, don’t comply with FAST. I won’t be able to help you then. Thx 😁

Got your email. Will reply tomorrow 😁

Two different things here:
1. DoDMERB evaluates you against a set of medical standards. It is a yes or no decision.
2. West Point evaluates your competitiveness as a applicant independently of the medical status. If you are in line to win a slate or get an offer through the NWL, they will evaluate the DoDMERB decision and decide if they grant a waiver.

Thank you. That has been my biggest concern regarding my application. I am pleased to here that they evaluate me independently.

Have made initial reply to Boudreau10

Final joint reply rendered from WP Admissions and DoDMERB moments ago.

Compared to me???? Everybody is young, so it's a rather low bar...But if you're old enough to remember Jon Lovitz on SNL....Uh...yeah...you're young...uh...yeah, that's the ticket

Would a principal nomination always be viewed as "competitive" for the waiver process?

IMO, apples and oranges. The medical waiver process is likely based on the merits of each medical case. Can it be waived, should it be waived, for the good of the Service, and possibly for this particular candidate.

Looking at it backwards, on the full continuum of scenarios, it’s great your elected official thought highly of you enough to give you the principal nom on the slate. That’s a good spot to be in. What if, in the SA’s eyes, you are not the top-ranked per their evaluation? If you are DQ with no waiver, they then are freed from the obligation to offer you an appointment, and can make an offer to their preferred candidate.

The best thing is for the two processes to remain relatively independent and not influenced by each other. What we all really want is for waivers to be given for the right reason, for the good of the Service.

I hope it works out for you.

Not to disagree.
Yes. "IF" otherwise qualified, by law, a principal nominee IS a letter of assurance for any and all Academies (except USCGA, where there are no required Noms). So Meting those two criteria, means those folks would be considered for medical waivers, if DQ

However, doesn't USMA rate the candidate for the MOC? If the file has been "closed" for medical reasons and the rating indicates as much, can't that dissuade the MOCs from giving a nom, let alone a principal nom?
