To preface this, my DS does not need a waiver. I have noticed a lot of candidates waiting for waivers and then receiving them from USNA and USAFA, but being denied by USMA. Is this normal, or just an anomaly this year?

In my opinion and from what I’ve seen, anything Air Force related is stricter in general. AFROTC, USAFA, enlisting, etc. I’ve already received my waiver from USMA for scoliosis weeks back. USAFA hasn’t even BEGUN my waiver process. They’ll request a waiver one day apparantly.

This is interesting but definitely good news for me. I was denied a waiver from West Point (I am appealing with AMI). Navy and USAFA gave me an LOA months after requesting a waiver, so I am more optimistic about those two than USMA. However, I have always heard that USMA is the least strict, and the other academies joke that they will take anyone.

It is good news that they may be less strict than USMA, though! I am hoping to receive a waiver because my "condition" is a joke. I know I will excel under any conditions, I just want to be given the chance.

It’s all dependent on what you need a waiver for. The different services look at certain waivers differently because the requirements within the branches are different depending on what job you’ll end up doing. I wouldn’t draw correlations among them and focus on what you can control. Good luck through the process!

DD received a USNA waiver, USMA didn’t even pursue one. In my N=1 experience, USMA is more strict than USNA.

There is more to the equation here. They will not pursue a waiver unless you are close to getting an offer. If you are #1 on your slate at USNA they will look hard at the waiver. If you are #3 on USMA they will probably not evaluate the condition.

Maybe it differs year to year. Both USMA and AROTC denied me on medical initially. USMA requested waiver with AMI and it was approved. AROTC took two more entries of AMI, one being voluntary new testing done by our personal decision, before finally approving the waiver.

USMA requested a waiver for me back in December. They sent me a letter saying I am 2'Q, and my file is just waiting on the waiver. Really hoping it gets waived. How long did it take you to hear back?

Also, can anyone speculate on the chances of a USMA waiver for spondylolysis getting approved?

This was back in 2021. USMA took a little over a month to grant the waiver.

I mean I got waived for my double scoliosis at 16 and 30 degrees. The cut off mind you is anything more than 30.

West Point requested a waiver for me back in November for spondylolsyis. Yesterday my DoDMERB portal says my waiver was granted. Not official in my West Point portal but hopefully a good sign. If you give them a statement from a doctor (I had the same doctor that diagnosed me) saying the spondylolsis is completely resolved and will not hinder any future training you should be alright. Then again the waivers seem to be a hit or miss thing so nothing is guaranteed.
