My son is in”under waiver review” status. I’m gathering info that will hopefully clear him quickly. Can I submit a letter from his doctor before they request it? If so, where do I submit? To the DoDMERB case manager? If anyone was under review for strabismus, were you sent for another eye exam or were records from your ophthalmologist stating your prism diopters sufficient? It’s for USMMA, who told me me their review process goes through the navy review board, they don’t have a panel.
Thank you for any info!

We submitted a letter from our directly to our DoDMERB case manager and that worked in obtained the waiver for the MMA but still waiting on the Navy Scholarship and USNA acceptance. Interesting that it goes through the Navy review board like they are saying but we only have the MMA at this time with the two other Navy's still outstanding. Hmmm.

From our experience, your DoDMERB case manager is happy to upload any new and relevant documents pertaining to your DQ even if you haven't been asked for an AIM yet. My DS was DQed for history of shoulder dislocation, so we immediately sent them all surgery notes, follow up visits, cleared for contact sports, and letter from football coach attesting his full participation this fall. Hope that helps!

We are in the same boat! Waiver granted by MMA but still no waiver even requested by USNA.

how do you know who your DoDMERB case manager is?
Log in to DoDMERB then on the home page 2nd section down there is a link for case managers. Click that and you look up your case manager by your last name (they are each given a section of the alphabet for applicants by last name). Hope that helps!

Are the Case Managers able to help in any capacity after you submit everything and are in a HOLD pattern or are the y just super helpful in navigating getting to that point? I am still trying to determine who the Waiver Authority is for USMMA because I have seen conflicting information.

How long did it take from the time all AMI was submitted until the time a waiver was granted?
Everything was submitted by Jan 8th and he was notified of appointment on Jan 31st by his senator. At that point, we noticed that DoDMERB said "waiver granted" where it used to say "under waiver review" but USMMA portal took a few days longer to update to show that the waiver was granted.

Regarding your other question above, the DQ letter you received from DoDMERB should go over what they can and cannot help you with. Are you already under waiver review or waiting on a request for an AIM? I also am unclear if USMMA has their own review board - maybe someone else can answer this for sure!

After reading 46 CFR 310.56(d), I think USMMA decides the waiver BUT according to standards consistent with USNA. But, please, anyone who knows for sure - we'd love to know!

Waivers. Some medical requirements may be waived for enrolled students and applicants to the USMMA who require such a medical waiver to qualify for admission and/or retention. Since commissioning in the United States Navy, or any other branch of the Armed Forces, is a requirement for graduation, no waivers will be granted for medical conditions which would prevent commissioning in at least a restricted status in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Individuals interested in waiver consideration may request a waiver by writing to the Superintendent, USMMA. The granting of medical waivers will be based on U.S. Navy guidelines and regulations for waiver consideration for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy and the physical requirements consistent with commissioning as a reserve officer in the U.S. Navy in a restricted line program. Individuals requesting medical waivers must be able to meet all other admission requirements, including the physical examination requirement for an original U.S. Coast Guard merchant marine license as a third mate and/or third assistant engineer. The decision of the Superintendent on any requested waiver is administratively final.

That is what is throwing me, DS has a waiver granted from USNA.... so is it a matter of USMMA getting it to them (physically pushing the information)? He has an LOA and all AMI was submitted on 1/11/24.

If he already has a waiver from USNA and has a LOA from USMMA, I think you will get it soon! You should be fine! Keep checking DoDMERB portal for it to switch to "waiver granted" like it already says for USNA - that is probably the soonest you will know. I would not stress at this point - it is just a matter of time! Good luck!

Unless the waiver required is related to vision. USMMA DoDMERB standards are dictated by USCG Licensing requirements. I believe color blindness for instance is a show-stopper for KP but not USNA. I could be wrong, but I think that's what I've read. So a waiver to one does not always mean a waiver to the other is a guarantee.

Good to know - thank you! I'm sure there is more to it than just what's in the statute.

Are you stating that USCG Waiver Authority is the Waiver Authority for USMMA unless you are colorblind?

He got a DQ after DoDMerb requested his prescription records. He is currently under waiver review for all three academies (USNA, USAFA, USMMA). From what I understand the DQ is issued by DoDMerb but the waiver is issued by each academy based on their standards and the competitiveness of the candidate. He has been "Under Waiver Review" status since Dec 15. We are waiting on the AMI request for the DQ.

I am not saying that. I am saying that the USCG licensing requirements dictate USMMA's standards. So it is a requirement to pass and obtain a USCG license to graduate from KP. I believe USN is actually the overarching waiver authority for USMMA as all mids at USMMA are technically navy reservists. Regardless of the authority, there are different standards depending on where you are going. USMMA had to adhere to the standards to get that CG License because of that requirement to graduate.
