the app asks for any narcotic use. Does this include prescription narcotic use after having wisdom teeth pulled? Thx

One would hope all your narcotics were prescription!

Is this the online version of Form 2492, that asks you “have you ever used/do you use,” and indicates in the small print to document all “Yes” answers in a free-form block near the end?

Answer the question straightforwardly. If you used the post-dental narcotic pain-killer prescribed, check “yes.” In the space provided, follow the instructions, or at a minimum, note the block number, narcotic used, known or approximate date, note Rx for wisdom tooth extraction, provider name.

Rules of military med forms:
- Answer just the question asked. Re-read them and take them literally. “Have you ever” actually means that, especially with drugs. Honesty is a good approach and makes it easy to keep your facts straight over the many times you will complete medical histories and security background forms.
- Don’t guess, self-diagnose or put what a family member says you have, unless they are your licensed provider.
- Read all fine print.
- Do not rush.
- This is one form to have your parents look over.
- Do not confuse alcohol USE with ABUSE.
- The military will not be surprised by experimental use or underage drinking.

Ask your family if there were other instances that you might not remember because of when they happened.

Interesting that the NROTC form 15331/101 asks what is, IMHO, a better and more precise question: "Haven you ever taken any narcotic, sedative, or tranquillizer drugs other than those prescribed by a physician or dentist?"

My recollection is that’s also the question DS answered (USNA DODMERB) Don’t have it anymore for reference, but he went recently and had me review his forms first. That seems like how it was asked from my memory.

Which isn’t as good as it used to be [emoji848]

the app asks for any narcotic use ...

A user -- not infrequent -- used for other than its intended and prescribed purpose.

Something you don't forget about.

More than likely, the Doctor will ask him what the "yes" means and make a notation in the report.

My DS said "yes" to alcohol, because he had tried my beer before and decided he didn't like it. When the Doctor asked him what the "yes" meant, he told him and the Doc said, "yeah, that's not what they're getting at here".
We laughed about it when he got out of the exam. I had to go with him by the way. Apparently, he couldn't go to the exam without a parent present, because he was 17 years old at the time. I sat out in the lobby and signed something.
That's all I remember about that particular day.

In preop, your Anesthesiologist may inject some Happy Serum into your IV .... and taking a pill or 2 of an opioid for a few nights after wisdom extraction is common. Neither of these make you a Habitual/Recreational User.

Alcohol is in most mouth wash. I don't drink, but we cook with wine and alcohol sometimes. Tasting is not the same as consumption.

This is a No Answer to me for the above situations.

This conversation reminds me of the line from the movie Stripes. "No, . . . never convicted." Sorry to be so flippant, but just be honest and use common sense.

In the end that’s what we did and we’re hoping they read all answers to see the usage was prescribed and only used twice due to the wisdom teeth oral surgery. The cynic in me worries they’ll just see yes and flag it

For this I wouldn’t worry. As @A6E Dad and @THParent stated, the contracted Doctor will see the “Novelty” of the situation and just ignore it. DODMERB shouldn’t see it.

Now for the Poly-Exam after the Academy, and many years down the road, you need to explain why you are sweating and fidgeting :)

That's the way I always recall the question being asked...but perhaps the Opioid epidemic is causing a re-thinking about how they ask the question. Use under the care of a physician would not be disqualifying, but past use (even with a Dr) could be relevant to future use. (There was a poster at my Dr. office the other day that stated the addiction could occur in days).

The bottom line, with this issue and all other application questions is RTFQ...ATFQ. (Read the full question, answer the full question....what do you think it meant ?). Don't try to read between the lines, quibble or sea lawyer the answer.

99 pct sure it’s still asked this way, DS currently going through it. OP may have been generalizing his post question?

Either way, advice is the same. Read the QUESTION. Answer the QUESTION.

DD 2492 (Report of Medical History) specifically asks "Have You Ever or Do You Now" use X..... Or "Have You Ever Had or Do You Now Have" X.... Be truthful, prescribed use should not be a problem, omissions on the form may cause problems later on with security issues. As mentioned numerous times...THIS IS THE ONE FORM YOU NEED YOUR PARENTS TO REVIEW! DO NOT "SELF DIAGNOSE"!

Well, DS has DODMERB tomorrow and he put yes to that question due to after surgery use. I’ll let you know how it goes....
Please do. Thanks!
DS had DODMERB two days ago. Didn’t even bring up the yes for narcs because the explaination was for the surgery that was completely disclosed in multiple areas of the form. I actually asked if we did the right thing by putting yes, and it seemed like it didn’t matter. Bottom line, it’s no big deal and it made me feel like we are honest folk. I think it doesn’t hurt to put yes. BTW, the actual phyical was FAST. He came in, questioned DS about the topics that were marked yes (save the narcs and tonsillectomy!...like, who cares, I guess), and checked him over in very much the traditional fashion. 15 minutes maybe (after weight and hearing had been checked...no urine test)? From what we could tell, nothing was a concern to the doctor. Still waiting to hear if our feeling was correct... Do these docs ever give you any hint if they think something didn’t pass? Just curious.
