Sorry no-one said wrong just sayin' there are situations where the Academy looks at certain candidates and makes decisions that could possibly be decisions that have strings, etc attached. If memory serves me correctly didn't you contact your MOC several times when your perfect "DS" was a candidate. Not one person on here has been able to say that the system is not able to be massaged and many candidates are not the top candidates. Except yours! Go back and reread your posts please. I am just giving my opinion in defense of @AREYOUKIDDINGME whom I agree with and the talking heads (you know who you are) who seem to know more than anyone else on this site are so damn cocky their kids got in. I know this person has been banned. But I for the record didn't and don't think the system can be massaged by us with no influence. As I told BGO, this kid is the only one my family can offer at this time. I didn't literally say take it or leave it but I think he got my point.

...and here I was just checking the thread to see how many new appointments went out. Then I saw the posts since Friday :oops:
Kind of wishing my school was open and I did not have time to read the boards.

I am CPR since August. I have no expectations other than I put my whole heart and energy into the best package I could. My grades are great and I have done all I can. I got the 4-year NROTC and I am excited to attend the same college as my sister possibly.
I would love to be a USNA Plebe, but honestly, I just want to serve. No TWE or BFE yet and that is A-OK, FYI

The goal is to graduate as an Officer and the good news is either path gets me there.
Parents need to relax, your kids will get the goal - just have the plan B,C,D ready.

Good morning, all... and I hope you are all safe and sound and sane during these crazy times. I have a question about Appointments. My DS is still waiting to hear from one private college (my alma mater), which is the only way he might consider not going to USNA. He has full 4-year NROTC Navy Option for that. It was his plan B. He's 90% sure he wants to go to USNA. My question, though, is can they rescind an Appointment at this point without cause? The admissions office called him yesterday morning (at 8am) to ask him why he hadn't accepted and while I wasn't on the phone, he said that they were being kind of forceful with him to make a decision ASAP. He thought he could wait until the date published (by May 1).

Can his appointment be taken away (assuming his grades and everything have stayed same) because he doesn't answer in timeframe they want?

He's an adult... I'm not going to tell him to do anything. But I have certainly been encouraging him. And I'm sorry if the question sounded obnoxious, but the tenor of the call from admissions rattled us.

Their goal is to create their puzzle. He has deadlines and should follow them.

Since you weren’t on the phone, it’s possible your DS misunderstood the tone.

He should be honest to everyone. Good luck in whatever he chooses.
 
It’s a learning opportunity for your DS to create a boundary and state he is taking the time to make a thoughtful decision. He can take the time he needs up to the deadline. Perhaps the two-way communication was not clear on both sides. What he heard may not be what they intended - but let it slip by, as that was yesterday’s conversation. Everyone’s rattled at this point, and perhaps that impacted clear communication.

Definitely true. Thank you for saying that. He is definitely on edge as are we all. He has an 84 year old grandfather with cancer; he’s worried about a lot right now (and it was 8am... he may not have been quite fully awake yet). Thanks for feedback.

The strict legal answer is that DS received "an Offer" of Appointment; and from a Offer /Acceptance perspective, an offer can be withdrawn prior to acceptance absent any other conditions added to the "offer." One could argue that the posting on the Admissions website that a Candidate "should" accept by May 1 adds the qualifier that the offer is open until May 1. Of course, you should read the terms of the Offer carefully, as I presume there are additional conditions like continued performance in school, conduct, etc.

Enough Law School 101 Contracts , the practical answer is that no one wants to sue USNA to save their Offer of Appointment (except some Plaintiff's lawyer that is looking for a fee). As A1 noted, Admissions is trying to put those last pieces of the puzzle together. I suspect they have another qualified candidate they would like to make a place for, and they saw this as a possible match. This would be the exception to the rule that USNA really doesn't try to fill the declined Offers because they expect some level of declines . A s I've said here before , there are exceptions to every rule, and I observed this scenario with my own candidates a few years back --one candidate with Offer sat on it until just about May 1, and another candidate sat in limbo until April 15. It ended up that neither Candidate was appointed that year -- Candidate 1 with the offer declined and went to USAF; the second Candidate reapplied the next year and was accepted.

This raises another issue that comes up here every year -- does someone with an Offer have a "duty" to he other applicants to decide quickly so that they can make room for the other candidate behind them ? There are differing viewpoints, but mine is that Candidate 1 won the competition, and is entitled to take his/her time to make the decision. As noted above, there is usually not a 1:1 correlation between someone declining an Offer and someone else receiving the Offer.


Finally, I truly hope Admissions wasn't trying to force a Candidate into making a spot decision. Nobody should attend USNA unless they are 100% committed and want to be there. Frankly, I suspect was more a matter of perception-- young LT's (I'm guessing this was one of the Admissions counselors that called), can be less than sensitive and tactful at times. (I can say that, because I was one long ago ...and haven't changed all that much !)
 
Agree with others above. Your son earned the appointment. The offer should be good till May 1st barring any changes to his status, grades, etc. They can and will pull the offer on May 2nd. In fairness to USNA admissions who called, high schoolers are not the best at letting other schools know that they will not be attending the college or university. In your case your DS is waiting on a decision about another school. He earned the appointment and should be afforded the opportunity to delay making a decision about the appointment within the timeframe specified by the offer. But in other cases, candidates who have been offered an appointment to USNA but subsequently committed to another school or SA, sometimes delay days or even weeks - in the euphoria of being accepted to their dream school, before pushing the decline button in the USNA application portal.
