USNA Class of 2027 Waiting and Speculating

This is so good to hear! We're all fully on board with DD's alt plan, too. These candidates are headed for great things, even if the Plan A is delayed or rerouted in the next few days.
He’s actually very happy with the Plan B school. I’m sure if he gets a turned down, he will be sad about that door closing, but Plan B is a great option. We had to do the deposit now in order to get into the housing portal when it opens this weekend. And although the school is great they have had some pretty major housing constraint issues the past few years, so we willing to eat the $500 if we have to, to make sure he has a bed (preferably in a room) 😂

I so feel for you and your son. It’s such a rollercoaster. We met an alum at an action shooting match here back in the fall. We have one scheduled for the 15th. The other day DD looked at me with terror in her eyes and said,”what do I say if I don’t get in???” It was heartbreaking.
No need for heartbreak and terror, merely “If I am not offered an appointment for the Class of 2027, I have my alternate plan ready to go, and I will re-apply, as so many successfully do,” delivered with steely calm, oozing grit, resilience, strength and determination. Add some fierceness for spice. That’s the way a future junior officer does it. You walk the talk. If she can do that, grab the fear by the horns and determine her attack plan, she will be acting, not reacting, a valuable life skill.

Last year NC came in low and late reporting. This year from our district alone there were multiple recruited athletes and NAPS students in the nomination pool, a much larger amount than you would think for a small-ish district. I feel like it's kind of been an unusually brutal year for NC applicants, at least from the nomination point of view.
It's just crazy at the amount of factors that determine the fate of our kids. My DS is still at CPR but is mentally preparing himself for plan b. He has been fairly calm throughout the process but is now starting to feel some stress that plan a may not be an option.

Oh she has that down pat :) and then she will go and (almost) outshoot dad :p. (I have no idea where she gets the competitiveness from...)

It was one of a few brief moments where she has let her guard down, even with us. It was refreshing, but it gave us a glimpse of what she's really feeling...

Because of all this and his waiver requirements DS didn't get a nomination this year, and got turned down in the first wave of TWE's (as we anticipated). Your DS still has hope, so don't give up! BUT... I will say that the process of making himself competitive for USNA has opened up a lot of options for him otherwise at the large state school he is attending. Even though we are disappointed about the outcome we realize that most of the deciding factors were out of his control and are excited at the new opportunities that are presenting themselves at the end of a successful freshman year. I am sure your applicant has a remarkable future ahead of him which ever direction he ends up going!

She should re-apply!

Before our time here is done, I think the thing I would like to share today so that the next year's waiters and speculators can see it when they are where we are is this:

I know it says April 15th and everyone said "expect it to be April 15th and not sooner" and I heard those words and saw those dates. I promise you I felt the same way you do right now. My child gets exceptional grades and is athletic and active and a strong candidate. Surely, USNA will see him and send him an offer as soon as we see that nomination hit. Maybe he'll even get a LOA because I read about those and he's such a strong candidate that I am SURE they will give him one. Of course they will! So yes, April 15th is what they SAY but my child is special. Unfortunately, all 16K of us have exceptional children. And then you think, okay, he got a nomination so NOW he'll surely hear from them any day now. Now it's just 5K or so and obviously he's going to get that offer now. Okay maybe not until after the holidays because they are busy. Well, okay obviously they want to wait for the Jan 31 application date to close so they know who they have. Of course, but beginning of Feb for sure. I mean, but some states are still sending their nomination slates so maybe another week but since ours went in November, I'm sure they will do ours first. Like for sure by March we will know for sure. And obviously he hasn't been turned down yet so they probably just haven't worked on his slate yet. They are saving our state...oh look, there's 2 appointments from my state, but they aren't the same district so obviously they'll do ours next. I mean, there's NO WAY it will go into April. Why would it? They have everything they need. And here we are on April 12th still CPR. How could he still be CPR this late when he had everything in by September like his BGO told him to and got a nomination earlier than most people? How can this be? Does it mean they MIGHT want him? Does it mean they haven't gotten to his slate yet? Does it mean they already sent an offer and our MOC isn't going to call. I better check the portal again every hour to see. BTW, that update time just means the system refreshed and has nothing to do with your candidate. And when the withdrawn button disappears, it also doesn't mean anything. But go get an 8 ball. Trust me, you won't regret that! Let me just check that portal one more...yeah...CPR...April 12th. 3 more days. Or maybe more, or less, or another month. Or in an hour. This is your life now. Buckle up because it's a bumpy wait. Tend to your Plans B through Q even though when other people tell you to do that, you know they are crazy because your child is exceptional and will get that offer early. Just in case, take care of the back up plans if for no other reason than to give you something else to do other than refresh the portal.

I told my son I would happily pay and lose the $250 if it meant he got his USNA offer and he still wants me to hold off another couple of days. It's his life but man I want to pay that deposit.
SnootyHen, I love it, and you're exactly right.

For everyone holding off paying a deposit, just remember, you OUGHT to pay a deposit somewhere, even if you already have an appointment. Anyone can break an arm or an ankle a day or week or month before I-day, and then you're out. (It happened to one of my friends who was supposed to be in the class before mine.) Just consider it insurance money.

DD's plan B was NROTC at Va Tech. Got the scholarship in Feb and shortly thereafter admitted to VT. Accepted both as she was CPR at the time and from this forum learned to always, always get Plan B squared away as soon as possible. Well, last week she gets into NAPS. Accepted that and then she informed VT admissions and NRTOC contact, separately of her change of plans. We were willing to eat the $400 downpayment, but VT immediately refunded it. Maybe bec it was before May 1st?

Logic: pay $400 for $100K scholarship to NAPS and $750K scholarship to USNA? No brainer, eat the deposit.

Congrats to your daughter. It’s such a long journey just to get to the start of the “real”journey! I’m sure they are all better for having gone through the process whatever the outcome is!

Facts! and now I know how much the deposit for VT is since thats what DS plans to do too. We put it off because my understanding is if they go into the Corps, it doesn't matter when you pay since their housing is already pre-determined? But definitely doing it before May 1st. Thats really cool they refunded you.

Do candidates who aren’t offered an appointment just get a TWE in the mail, or does their online status change from CPR to something else indicating no appointment first?

She wanted to tell the school and the corps as soon as possible so a deserving but waitlisted kid could get the scholarship and the admission.

You are killing me softly with your song!!! This is exactly exactly my DS’ journey! I wouldn’t have written it any different! Good luck to all!!:)

Ok…. We are “those people” who called admissions again. Just got told:
1. If you are still CPR they have not done final review yet (which everyone on here Already knew) but that almost everyone is scheduled over the next couple of days (And btw admissions is open on Saturday, so April 15 into 16 decision notification is not out of the question)
2. They asked for DD candidate number (I called at her request because she’s at school). They looked her up and confirmed she is scheduled for review this week and will know something by April 15.
3. They reconfimred that YES turned down, naps, foundations, waitlist and appointments are all still on the table.
4. If you are declined and want to reapply, that application for class of ‘28 opens…. April 16 🤪 and college students should go on the website and look at Plebe class requirements and align their classes as much as possible.

DD is understandably really stressing and bracing for a turned down, but is also resolved that no matter what, an answer allows us to move forward with a plan... whatever plan that is. Hang in there everyone. Collective deep breath….
Thank you for the information. It really helps the rest of us understand the process.

she's not even ready to think that way just yet.....

she has a clear plan, and Navy is her preferred avenue to get there, but she also has 3 back up schools and contacts that will get her there. she's got it covered waaay better than I ever would.
as someone who put in her most successful re-app this year, I would say let it go and don't push him/her. It took me at least 2 months to make the decision to re-apply and put my 100% into a strong app this year. I was pretty angry after the 2nd twe, and it wasn't until may that I decided to reapply. these applications are extremely difficult and lengthy and it takes a lot to want to do another app again. I still don't know if i got in, but I didn't allow my parents to make decisions regarding my app or push me to do it, I relied on myself to keep going and improve my sat, improve my gpa from last year, and improve my cfa scores. moral of the story is that if they want to re-apply, it will take some time but once they know they want it, they'll give their everything to it.

Gosh, couldn't have said it better myself. SO SO MANY in the same boat. EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN. We ALL have exceptional children. Thank you for sharing, and good luck to all those still at CPR. To those who will try again next year, YOU TOO ARE EXCEPTIONAL and I wish you all the luck with whatever your future holds.

3 more days until April 15th.
