USNA D&B

The Drum and Bugle wraps up their support of regular season Basketball tomorrow in Alumni Hall tomorrow evening at 1900 Go Navy!

What are auditions like for D&B and other ensembles?
I cannot speak for other ensembles but for the Drum and Bugle corps, In the first couple of days after I day, Plebes will go to a brief in Mahan Hall and sit through a presentation explaining what The Drum and Bugle corps is and does. He will then be asked to proceed to specific instrument audition rooms and will be guided to the most appropriate room based on their experience. In the Actual audition the plebe will be asked to demonstrate some techniques on a particular instrument and some sight reading to evaluate the current level of proficiency. Once all that are interested are auditioned, letters of invitation to join the 2019 Plebe summer Drum and Bugle corps will go out through D&B detailers and the plebes will be notified of their next obligation with D&B. They will then begin to experience the ECA that provides the most support, spirit and enthusiasm for the Brigade of Midshipmen on the yard.

Sorry about being away from the forum, it has been a very busy few months. If you still have a questions feel free to contact me at decapio@usna.edu
I have just read the obituary for Richard DeCapio. Sad day for USNA D&B:

CAMBRIDGE — Richard Joseph DeCapio, 53, of Cambridge, Md., beloved husband of Laurie (Hertel) DeCapio, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 27, 2019. They both hail from Connecticut and relocated to Cambridge, Md., in 2006, so Rich could take his dream job as the assistant band director of the United States Naval Academy Drum & Bugle Corps, in Annapolis, Md.

Rich was the son of the late Orlando and Frances DeCapio of East Lyme, Conn.; and in addition to his wife, Laurie, he leaves behind his beloved labs, Bailey and Ace; his brother, John DeCapio of New Jersey; his father-in-law, Richard Hertel of Glastonbury, Conn.; his sister and brothers-in-law: Nancy and Peter Teveris of S. Glastonbury, Conn., Christopher and Sue Hertel of Wethersfield, Conn.; brother-in-law, Keith Hertel of Lantana, Fla.; along with his niece, Erica Teveris and her husband Matt Staebner of S. Glastonbury, Conn.; and a nephew, Jesse Teveris, also of S. Glastonbury, Conn.

Rich loved music and enjoyed going to jams to play his guitar. He was also a member of the Bridgemen Marching Band, Bayonne, N.J., for many years. He also loved his Jeep Wrangler, which propelled him into becoming a member of the Chesapeake Jeep Club. His other hobbies included golf, RC racing and playing the guitar.

A viewing and visitation will be held on Saturday, March 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Newcomb & Collins Funeral Home, 308 High St., Cambridge, Md.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s name can be made to the Naval Academy Drum & Bugle Corps, checks payabe to U.S. Treasury — MEMO LINE (VERY IMPORTANT): MWF/D&B, Comptroller Gift Funds Division, 181 Wainwright Road, Annapolis, MD 21402.

Can students just participate in an enseamble band and not in the marching band? Or do they have to participate in both groups?
Yes, there are 11 musical ensembles at the naval academy including a Jazz band, an Orchestra and an orchestra for the musical production.
.
Very sad to hear about the loss of Rich DeCapio. Great institutions wouldn't exist without music and their associated musical groups and ensembles.
.
I was also wondering if there is information posted on the USNA website for Orchestra groups? Also, are there Piano performance and ensemble interest groups? Are the cadets allowed to bring their smaller instruments with them to the academy? Our daughter has few cellos.

I don't think @USNAD&B will be able to answer that. It was his obituary that I posted. I read on FB that the drumline will perform in his honor at his viewing. Wonderful tribute.

I just caught the tail-end of this thread … Wow. What an unfortunate loss for the whole USNA community. Music is central to all Great institutions.
.
Btw. Our church wouldn't be the same without my wife, who has donated her time on the Piano and Organ there for over 20 years. Our DD will back her up from time-2-time when she wasn't available. Music is everything in our household …

I still hear my father (Old Navy Captain -- who passed away 4 years ago), playing Polkas or Beatles classics on his old Excelsior Accordion. He grew up in the old Polish neighborhoods of Baltimore.
