We experienced the USNA Glee Club's performance of the Messiah this past weekend. As a person who likes and appreciate music but would typically not spend money and time to sit through a symphony concert, I was blown away. The Glee club's (Men and Women) were accompanied by a selection of musicians from the Annapolis Symphony. There were four nationally renowned soloists as well that performed and all were suberb. PBS film crews were even there taping as they will re-broadcast the performances in the future.
For those who may not know, that despite USNA not having a Music degree program, there is a vibrant Music department at USNA with a wide range of groups with Glee club being one of them. Participation in Glee club is by audition done during Plebe summer, yes they account for fact that your voice may not be in great shape. Glee club practices are during ECA time and counts as an ECA. The group does a short fall tour (last year in Dallas, this year was in Indianapolis) and a longer spring tour during Spring break. They also perform the Messiah in December and a Spring Oratorio. Since it is a Brigade Supported Activity generally costs to members are covered. They sing the National anthem at home football games, the A-N game and at various other sporting events like Orioles, Ravens and Commanders games. They are also "on call" to perform in DC for any official State function that may require their services. Needless to say it is a very time intensive ECA.
If you get the chance to hear any of the Glee clubs performances from tours to Messiah to Oratorio's you will not be disappointed.
