USNA Pistol/Rifle Ribbons

Notice where the Navy firearm ribbons sit in a small stack .... :bleh2: ...... not very important.

I think they're probably good for a confidence boost for someone just starting out, but wouldn't impress or draw a second glance once they reach the fleet. Ribbons and medals can be different things to those who earn them. My dad had multiple Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars with V and Army Commendation Medals from Vietnam, but they were in a coffee can in the attic until I had everything mounted in a shadowbox. He was proud of his service, but if you asked him, his answer was, "Anytime I got one of those, it just meant me and my guys had a bad day. "

At least Navy gets a Medal to go with it. AF was ribbon only. That and one other ribbon only messed up my Shadow Box but at least it falls above foreign decorations in precedence.:biglaugh:

I'm guessing I drew the "parents want it more than the kids" when I said "ugh" to him missing by 2 or 3 points. So let me clarify. The topic was only discussed for about 20 seconds on our call. I didn't say much and we moved onto other great stories. I said "ugh" in my response on this thread because I know he is a good enough to score Expert on the qual (not be confused with an actual firearm expert), but just rushed it and lost out. I'm fully aware the qual is a blip on the radar and, as @PT Doc says, at most just gives a little confidence boost and gives them a ribbon or medal to wear. I'm happy for him that he got the qual and I know there are much more important successes to achieve.

Just to be clear, my comments weren't directed to you or meant to disparage anyone. The thread simply triggered a remembrance for me. Best of success to your son going forward. May his fruit salad be tall and colorful.

In the Navy there is one that goes just before the marksmanship that is very important in the SWO world and that is the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon which is ribbon only/no medal. The number of stars, bronze and/or silver indicate how many times you deployed and seasoned SWOs give that a lot more attention than most of the other, theoretically higher awards.

Yeah he thought it would be cool to have the Expert medals but really in the grand scheme it is irrelevant. Fortunately academics are his strong suit so he would certainly prefer higher grades over the expect medal. Maybe down the line he can be a range detailer and get it then. Certainly he can improve 2 or 3 points.
Who wants an Lousy A in thermodynamics when you can have an expert ribbon? Chicks dig the ribbons…
