USNA Preliminary Application

My son just checked, and he has a new candidate number as well.

That's always a little encouraging. Congrats to son.

There will be little victories along the way, during this application marathon;
1. The email telling him how to register on the Department of Defense Medical Exam Testing System (DoDMETS) and schedule his medical exam.
2. Filling out nomination applications and (hopefully) going to interviews.
3. Having the BGO interview.
4. Maybe going to NASS or attending a Candidate Visit Weekend?
5. Getting a nomination.
6. Etc.

Strap into the rollercoaster. It's a long ride with ups and downs - but fun at the end - no matter what happens.

In my region, the only official candidates for 2026 so far are re-applicants. There hasn't been any new comms from Admissions to BGOs on this in the past few weeks. I would expect they will get it done soon, but no firm date

Not sure if that is the case or not. But since he had his old portal log-in still available, I suggested he check just like SpectacularDiver did. And low and behold, he had a new 06 number (different than his 05 number). He said it was pre-populated with the info from the preliminary app. Last year, he put in for Summer Session, but they weren't held, so he got an email later with his link to the full app. This year seems a little different.

Since he is a re-applicant, and the DoDMERB stuff is good for two years, he doesn't have to re-do his physical, based on my understanding. And I'm hoping that since they granted him the medical waiver for his '25 app that they will just start off saying he's cleared and he won't have to wait for the waiver again!

I think there is a form re-applicants complete with any updates or changes to medical history.

For the most complete answer beyond “good for two years” and specifics on how the waiver process works for re-applicants as to if everything is “good to go” or not - you know what I’m going to recommend. The applicant should email @MullenLE .

I did my preliminary application at the end of June and haven’t heard anything either.

Patience -- its coming !
While some may have heard July 15 during NASS, I wouldn't sit by the computer waiting for it ....
Feedback I have heard from BGO training conducted last week is that it is in the hands of USNA IT Department (as it has been for awhile now), so Admissions really doesn't have control of the timing. The good news is that IT is supposed to be cleaning up some of the connectivity glitches we struggled with last year.

For those new to the game, USNA launched an all new Admissions platform last year , and the roll out was , lets say, less than optimum. Here's hoping the problems were addressed, and this year is smoother.

Given that I'm a re-applicant, I logged back into the old system. I've been assigned a new candidate number, and now have access to the 2026 application.

Looks like they're just holding off for a bit before giving everyone full access.
Same here new candidate number but still no access ( as expected) it’s all in the works and should be up to speed in the coming weeks. Best of luck to you!

My son has been filling the new app out, so not sure why it isn't working for others if you have a new candidate number??

Caution ..this may just be trickling out... New Candidates aren't in the BGIS program yet , so don't expect that a BGO will be reaching out to you immediately. Also, don't be surprised if you aren't assigned a BGO in the portal, or you see a reassignment to a different BGO within the first couple weeks . Area Coordinators often need to readjust their BGO assignments for a variety of reasons, including balancing both school and candidates assignments, elimination of conflict situations, and bringing new BGO's onboard. Also, if you are a reapplicant and want a different BGO assigned feel free to request -- the AC doesn't necessarily recognize you are a reapplicant. (See Reapplication sticky above about pros and cons of requesting a new BGO).
