USS Doris Miller CVN 81

The previous USS Miller was a Knox class frigate, FF-1091. It’ll be nice to see Dorie’s name on the stern plate of a flat top.

I went to sea on the Miller for a couple of weeks back in the day. I was assigned to a sister ship when Miller had a key watchstander go out medically the day before they were going out on real world ops (tracking a Soviet Sub) so I headed out with them. It was a good but very busy time.

@OldRetSWO I loved the Knox class. I made Chief on the Bowen. She was my last ship in which I was ship’s company.

I was the XO of Valdez's Reserve crew which was about half of the ship. When underway, I was one of two ASW Evaluators (standing port and starboard) to lead the ASW effort whenever we were doing ASW operations. When the Miler lost one of its evaluators, the DESRON Staff asked for me to jump in. We went out and relieved the ship that was tracking and took our turn for a couple of weeks. I had previously been on a CGN with good ASW capabilities but really liked the Knox class for this mission.

@OldRetSWO I was on the Bowen when the TAR female sailors checked onboard. We knew they were coming but thought they would arrive when we returned to Norfolk from Rosey Roads. The XO launched the MSCS to the airport on a secret mission in one of those vans that seats 15 but crams in even more. I had a suspicion something was up due to the box of female specific medical items waiting for me on the pier.

There was big press a few days later claiming the Ike or maybe the GW was the first combatant to have women as permanent ship's company. That was lie because we were still steaming under COMNAVSURFLANT's operating schedule as well as RESFOR. It all worked out as the days went by though. I got a TAR IDC as a relief and moved on to shore duty in Florida after a long five years in Tidewater counting a year of IDC school.

1579625070004.pngI see in this picture that Dorie is wearing black shoes while everyone else in the foreground is in white. Did enlisted men of that era wear black shoes? It looks that way from those sailors the background.

yep, petty officer 1st class and below wears black shoes with whites. CPO and officers wear white shoes. We had a new chief check onboard just a few days after initiation and pinning. We were getting dressed for a change of command ceremony and he brought his black shoes to the lounge area of the Mess and started putting them on. Chiefs were snickering and acting like they were going to let him go topside with black shoes. I still to this day don't understand how he didn't notice we were wearing white shoes. The command master chief walked in to roust us about and saw the black shoes. I knew what was coming and scooted out as soon as the first scream came out of his mouth. The rest of the story is he went through the initiation process at a small shore command and latched on to a reserve center or something like that for most of his instruction. Not good. He actually didn't even have white shoes and was able to skip the ceremony.

FF 1089 was named after Brown. Him being an aviator would have fit the carrier for sure. Nothing against non-navy presidents, but it's good to see a carrier named after a navy hero.

Yes, but the Brown was transferred to the Egyptians in 1998. My brother served on her.

She is now the Damiyat (F961) and the last I heard is still serving in the Egyptian navy. We also sold Knox class frigates to Turkey, Mexico, and Taiwan. The former Ainsworth is a museum n Turkey. http://wikimapia.org/24815839/TCG-Ege-F-256 I can't remember if Mexico or Taiwan still has active Knox ships. I belong to the Knox class sailors FB page and will look it up later.
