Vanderbilt is a classless institution

I hate to admit it on here, but I went to one of those SEC schools for my law degree (not Vandy). A lot of that choice was inspired by my desire to be debt-free upon graduation. I had GI Bill benefits, but that wouldn't cover the tuition at the private schools. Indeed, the big SEC state schools tend to be affordable, even for out-of-state students (at least they did in 2003).

While I won't say that everyone is a full-fledged intellectual giant at these places, there are plenty of students in the undergraduate, and certainly in the graduate programs, who are making intellectual contributions.

That is true. My comments were more about the overall tenor of the schools. While many big state universities aren't intellectually outstanding, I find the SEC to be particularly egregious in terms of being sports-centric and steeped in the antiquated "antebellum" traditions rather than academics.

In general, college rankings are only worth so much, but in terms of Top 50 National Universities the SEC can only claim one, whereas say the Big Ten has 5 or the ACC has 6.

Regardless, I'm glad that an apology was issued.
