How does one go about trying to walk on to a varsity sport as a plebe?

The particular sport in question is heavywieght crew.
 
During plebe summer, there are briefings and try-outs. I will defer to the current mids/plebes to comment on the specifics for how it has most recently been done.
 
My mid walked on to crew as a plebe and had a fantastic experience. As you probably know, it's demanding, and not one of the glamour sports, but there's a great sense of team spirit among the oarsmen, and some real advantages to pursuing a varsity sport as a plebe.
 
im a coxswain now on the plebe heavyweight team..pull good numbers, show up, be willing to work hard, you'll have no problem making the team..with the exception of one person (not sure why), all plebes must row on the plebe team whether that be light or heavyweight..but it is still considered a varsity sport regardless
