Jacob Bower died Thursday evening.

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- A cadet at the U.S. Military Academy died Thursday during training, officials announced.
The cadet was Jacob Bower, 18, of Fairmont, according to a news release.

Bower was participating in a land navigation exercise during field training, when he was found unresponsive, West Point officials said.

Attempts were made to revive Bower, but he was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m.

His death, and what led to it, are under investigation, officials said.

Bower, who was a member of the Class of 2015, graduated from East Fairmont High School, where he was a three-sport athlete and a member of the National Honor Society.

So sorry to hear such tragic news. My DS is at plebe at Kings Point and the news was circulated to us. Our deepest condolences to Jacob's family. We will keep his family in our prayers and ask the LORD to hold him in the palm of his hand.

My prayers goes out to Cadet Jacob Bower's family and also his battle buddies and leadership. It's always hard to lose a soldier especially when it's during training.

Dear Parents,

Many of you have heard by now that Cadet Jacob Bower, a member of the Class of 2015, died yesterday during training.

Our prayers go out to his family as there are no words to convey our sorrow.

Here are a few things that you may find helpful to know:

Counseling is always available to all cadets. The counseling efforts and chaplain outreach continue and are available to the new cadets/cadet cadre.

Members of the Academy leadership (to include the Superintendent, Commandant, Regimental Commander, etc.) have spoken with and continue to spend time with the cadets.

Training will continue, but the new cadets have been and will continue to be watched closely every step of the way.

New cadets are being encouraged to write letters to family and in some cases allowed to make phone calls.

The new cadets will have an opportunity next week to make their 10 minute phone calls as scheduled.

West Point takes every incident very seriously. The investigation is ongoing.

Please do not perpetuate any rumor or “my cadet said” as we wait for official information to be shared.

Thanks for your understanding and support!

With heavy heart today –

Best wishes,

Deb
