I went to my optometric appointment today where I was told that I had astigmatism (180 I believe) and a higher degree needed for my glasses. Will this disqualify me and is there a chance I would need a waiver for this situation? I do not know the diopter value though.

quick google search brought up this:

Eyes and Vision

Uncorrected visual acuity worse than 20/400 in either eye. Vision not correctable to 20/20 in either eye. Refractive error exceeding plus or minus 8.00 diopters (spherical equivalent). Astigmatism exceeding 3.00 diopters and anisometropia exceeding 3.5 diopters. Refractive error corrected by orthokeratology, kerato-refractive, PRK, laser, or any other corneal enhancement.

It is apparent the OP does not have any knowledge of refractions. Doing a google search which, though the information found is correct, uses words that will further confuse him even if he looks them up and writes the definitions down. Even if the person is a physician. I guarantee it. It is a 6 month course. This question should be referred to our gift from above, Mr. Mullen.

Actually, the OP does not indicate what service they are interested in. Vision, I believe, may be the only standard that is service specific.

You don't have to be a doctor to understand if your vision exam is within standards. The OP, themselves, mentions that they have an astigmatism but did not get the diopters. If they were armed with the info from their eye exam, they could easily see whether they are within standards and whether they might have to seek a waiver. For an astigmatism, a review of the Army and Navy standards indicates that anything above 3.0 is disqualifying.

I agree that Mr. Mullen is a gift to this forum, but sometimes you need to help yourself - especially when a candidate just walked out of their vision exam and doesn't even have a disqualifying medical code to address yet.

Dakiti - I already responded with the REAL ANSWER.:wiggle:

It happens...And the use of Dad in your name means you're old enough to know about Paul Harvey's...The Rest of the Story. What's on the OP, is NOT always the complete story :wiggle: :zip:

Thank you all! Every step in the SA application process is so significant to me and I keep my hope towards the date of appointment.

I had to put my readers on to read this thread.
