Hello,

This weekend my family and I were in the DC area. So we decided we would just go and look at USNA. We are not going on an admissions visit or anything like that but I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations of things to do or places to see either in the city or at USNA itself. Sorry for the late post because we are going tomorrow but I just thought of posting it here.

Thanks,
Andrew Mitchell

Andrew,
My son is a hopeful 2012. We were there a few weeks ago. Take time for the tour, it's not long and so worth the experience. I believe they do them every hour or so. The downtown area, just outside the front gate is simply enjoyable. Hope the weather cooperates for you, enjoy the moment and breath it all in!

Mitch- about a month ago you were really worried that you were not going to be able to even talk with your Mom about your hopes for going to an academy. It sounds like perhaps there is at least a little bit of communication and recognition that this is something you are serious about- so congratulations! Take a tour of USNA - there is a visitor center as you go thru the main gate where you can get a pretty good tour and overview of the school. Good luck and enjoy yourself and perhaps get your parents to do the same!

The video at the Visitor's center really is informative. As a parent, I was proud that my son aspired to such service to his country!

Annapolis is a nice small city. Lots of nice shops and restaurants to enjoy, especially if the weather is nice!

Enjoy the day!

To echo everyone above, take the guided tour and spend as much time in the Visitor's Center. There's lots of displays there to look at. Also, be sure to walk around DTA (Downtown Annapolis). Lots of shops and resturants. You'll probably see some mids there in uniform.

Actually, this weekend, there is a mando LAX game that the whole Brigade has to attend on Saturday. We'll be marching from the Academy to the Stadium for the game. Also, on Sunday will take place one of the longest standing traditions upheld at the Academy - the St. John's vs. USNA Croquet Match. St. John's is the liberal arts college across the street from the Academy. That is the thing to do on Sunday in Annapolis and everyone will be out there in their best "Easter/spring clothing" to watch the match and have fun.

Also visit the museum, a wonderful place to see. And since you will be on the 'yard', take the time to talk to as many mids as you can. You and your parents can formulate your own opinion based on talking to those who are currently going there. I found them very open/candid and honest the last time I was there.

I just got back from my visit last week and the place is absolutely beautiful. I was extremely surprised that they let you walk through the campus at your leisure (at USMA they had a little bus tour, and when that was done they pretty much told you to leave). Although I had no lack of enthusiasm before, I am extremely excited for July 2.

I had a great time at USNA today. That is true she has become understanding of my hopes. This has mostly been solved by when she talks to her friends about it and they assure her it is a good life. Also she talked to my guidance counselor without letting me know and she helped out with most of my mom's questions.

See if you can get a Mid to give you a guided tour of the Lab Decks. They'll blow your mind.

I hear the new ship simulators are out of this world. Wish I'd gotten to see them when my classmate was in the Sea/Nav Department. :frown:
