Hello. I was ready a VMI packet/ booklet that overviews the Institute. And I read a stat on AFROTC. "The VMI Air Force ROTC pilot/ combat systems officer selection rate is consistantly at or near 100 percent." Is this true? If it is VMI is my #1 college choice no matter what. My dream is to be a pilot.

One quick question: Does VMI have a weight room/ gym that is open to all cadets, and if so, how much free time will you have a day to work out?

Thanks, Trey

Can't answer your first question, but VMI does have a pretty awesome weight room/gym and it is open to all cadets that are not Rats, I'm assuming! During Rat Year I'm pretty sure you'll still get a pretty good work out.

If you look at the average VMI day-to-day schedule, they set aside 2 hours after classes for athletics. And if you look at curriculum maps on their website for majors, everyone has to take PE classes. So you'll be in shape!

Thanks! I know its 5 years away, I'm so ready to advance into the military!

Most AFROTC dets will post numbers like that in recruiting packets. But take them with a grain of salt. My det had a 100% selection rate as well. But these numbers are for rated slots, not just pilot slots. They include those selected for CSO, ABM, and RPA pilots which are not very hard to get. The slots are competed for on a national basis among AFROTC cadets. The boards will not care what school you go to.

They will care about your GPA, commanders ranking, AFOQT/TBAS scores, etc. So regardless of what school you go to, work hard.

I didn't go to VMI so I cant really comment on what their gym situation is like. But I'm sure someone else on these boards has experience. Good luck!

I would be skeptical of anybody who claims a 100% selection rate on anything. And keep in mind most don't even make it past the initial screening process meaning ability to pass a Class I physical, technical major, GPA, class standing etc.

First point is what your vision like...pilots need great eyesight not just 20/20 but depth perception, low light, etc......a lot of canidates fail at this step....

Two my rat is currently working out in an excellant weight room on a program developed for him by "trainers" at the school
