VMI Class of 2018 Applicants

My DS received the magical envelope from VMI on Jan 11th. He was very excited as were we. Still hoping for a scholarship though. AS far as PMI goes, DS didn't interview at VMI but did attend the overnight weekend.

DS was RD. All of his paperwork was in by 12/15 and his acceptance was dated 1/7.

Does VMI notify of acceptance on the Post View portal or is acceptance notification mailed? DS applied to VMI as part of his NROTC scholarship and is still waiting to hear if he's been accepted.

DS recd appointment letter in mail first and then the portal was updated over 1 week later...it shows a checklist of additional items to be submitted.

When are you guys doing the FAFSA? Does anyone know VMI's deadline to get it done?

According to their website, their deadline is March 1st. I submitted DS's FAFSA on January 2nd- received an email 24 hours later that it was accepted and forwarded to his college choices. I think the earlier the better. Also, VMI has its own FA application to fill out, so make sure to do that if you haven't. I believe it asked for two essay answers.

Was that the merit scholarship application? If so, I've already submitted it. Thanks!

Finally some good news...

DS applied RD and received his appointment letter today, dated 10 JAN. He did his interview at the IS school that's 6th on his list for the ROTC scholarship. Fingers crossed the 2nd board scholarship notifications are given out soon. It looks like we'll be making a trip to Virginia in the next month or so, hopefully for an overnight visit and to weigh the options of Plan B.

Now, if he would just hear something about Plan A!

I am not clear ... is VMI Plan B?

What information would you like to glean from your visit?

Bruno, myself, or any number of VMI alum may be able to answer some questions to augment your fact finding trip.

What is Plan A?

Best wishes

Thank you -- we may have more questions after an in-person visit. I want him to get a "feel" for VMI before committing to anything.

Plan A is USMA or USNA. (waiting to hear)
Plan B is the 4 yr AROTC scholarship to one of 6 schools listed, VMI and VT as 1 & 2. We are in the center of the country, already paid to go to USNA CVW in April and USMA SLE in June, and finances are very tight, so we've been waiting to hear from AROTC and/or VMI/VT before scheduling a visit.

DS is very interested in the SMCs, but as a parent, I want him to see them first hand and weigh the options of each school he listed -- size, degree programs, atmosphere of CoC, cost, etc. We will probably make a trip to VA over spring break, unless he does not receive the scholarship. Since VMI & VT are both SMCs but seem to be different experiences (based on what I've read on this forum), I'm not sure which one would be better for him.

He listed a STEM major (chemistry) for the scholarship; 35 ACT; 13/501 class rank; 7 APs + 2 dual credit courses; varsity swimmer 4 yrs/captain 1 yr; boy scout, boy's state, lifeguard, volunteer hours, etc .... if he doesn't get a scholarship I will be surprised, but he will move on to Plan C, which is schools #3 & 6 on the list -- neighboring OOS/IS public universities where he's already been accepted, been given merit scholarships, admitted to the honors college, and will definitely qualify for more financial aid.
