VMI matriculation & next steps.

Hang in there, It's worth the wait

For those of you with a DS/DD in the Ratline, I was just like you a couple of years ago. DS was a rat. He's now a 2nd, and like you I couldn't wait for the phone calls and the opportunity to visit the Post every chance I got. Words can't express the feelings of Sunday's when our rat, and a lot of others, went to church to escape the pressure of being a rat for a few hours and how we anxiously waited for that Sunday afternoon phone call that he was allowed to make from his host family's home. Personally speaking, there is an extremely wide range of emotions that will be felt by you and your DS/DD, not only during the Ratline, but during their entire time at the Institute and it will culminate with tears of joy, a great big smile, and so much PRIDE that every one you meet will see it because you will not be able to contain it. I have watched my son develop into a man of honor. The change you will see in your DS/DD is astonishing. As someone stated in a previous post, VMI is a "Family". I have met so many fantastic young men and women and their families at VMI and have been impressed with them all. Many of them gave me advice when my son was entering the "I". I owe special Thank You's to Larry's Mom Linda (Larry2013), Bruno, Sam, Bill, and Monica, Dave and Robin, and the many others who have posted in this forum. We especially enjoy the tailgating during football season and we welcome you and your DS/DD to join us anytime. If you can't come send your DS/DD to make some new friends and enjoy another bit of the VMI experience.

Most of all, I wanted to extend a hello, a few words of encouragement, and offer the opportunity to be of help if you have questions.

Here are just a few tidbits of information and ideas that may help out: When taking or sending items to your DS/DD, put them in gift type bags with handles. They can put their arms through the handles and it makes it easier to carry things while straining. Use chalk or corn starch to rub onto smudges or stains on their ducks (white uniforms) for a quick fix when they can't get to the laundry. Black Sharpie markers are good for touching up heel and shoe scuffs before polishing. Aerosol hair spray. I know, you're thinking what hair are they going to spray? It's not for their hair, but it's great for spraying over their blankets to keep the dust from flying around. Blister pads, lip balm, sunscreen, and a hat clip made from a report binder (cut it to fit under their cover (hat) so they can keep their ID card and other papers from falling out each time their remove their cover), will all come in handy.

Would love to meet you all. Hope this helps. Hang in there, It's worth the wait. Go Keydets!!!!

"Face forward, keep moving, and it won't be long until they're yelling at the person behind you!"

Hi all....I had to finally post after silently stalking for the past few months. I have spent the past two weeks worrying about how our Rat will handle everything, mentally, emotionally and physically. I am almost embarrassed that I was so worried. When he emailed last night that Hell Week was over the relief was incredible. We did receive some calls, Wed after he met with his advisor and Sunday after services. These calls were extremely reassuring that he was handling everything and making it through. I can hear the pride in his voice and he already sounds like a changed young man.

I really want to thank all of the previous posters for posting questions, answers, tidbits, suggestions and advice to us newbies. This forum is a wonderful resource tool for parents and Cadets.

DS said "these Rats had an outstanding crucible" ..they even swam 600 meters in the river.. just thought sharing that tid bit might brighten some of your days.

I just took my DS back yesterday. He's now a "Third" and so glad to not be a Rat. He's a Rat Challenge clerk this year, so he will be working with the Rats through November. Rat Challenge cadre are different than regular cadre; they tend to be supportive and help the Rats during their Rat Challenge events. He's looking forward to helping the Rats do great things this year.

I cannot believe how fast this last year has gone. Before you know it, all of you parents of the current Rat class will say the same thing. Tonight is Dyke night. They will finally be officially assigned to a Dyke. You may even get a quick call tonight! Classes start tomorrow. The routine will kick in and things will start to get a little better. Each day is a day closer to Breakout. If you are going to New Market, enjoy the day with your Rat. Stuff them full of food after the battlefield charge. Enjoy the parade. Take them out for some family time in Lexington. It will be a great day.

Has anyone sent their Rat anything from Amazon? Any advise on how to fill out the Ship To page? I get a message that the 450 Burma Road address is not a valid address.

Thanks for your help.

Yes! DS called from his Dyke's phone. In fact, his Dyke lives only about 5 minutes from our house, in a neighboring development.

I just know this year is going to fly by. I know there will be lots of challenges, but along with those there will growth and victories. I look forward to seeing all the positive changes!

Crucible pics

The VMI Lacrosse Twitter account was also posting pics of the Rat Crucible yesterday

The photo store on the VMI website hasn't been updated in a few days. Hopefully, they will add some more this week.

What a great week for my Rat, his company (Alpha) and all his BR. So very proud of all of them.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The pride in my son's voice was beyond description. Like you said, it's like he is a changed person already. So very proud of ALL of them!

Black leather gloves after Breakout and a black scarf..He destroyed the issued ones. I have always sent him packages to his regular mailbox address and never had an issue whether it was via Amazon or from home. It has not caused him any grief to do so. If it were an issue he would definitely tell me so.
Ref Amazon just use
Cadet Joe Rat
Virginia Military Institute
VMI Box 80???
Lexington Va 24450-0304

Good Luck
If memory serves me correctly.. I had the same issue with 1800contacts delivering to the Burma Rd address, so that is why i opted to be a rebel and see what would happen.

Hello to any night owls! Cadet Life has posted lots of shots from Dyke night. Not sure if they plan to do a crucible album. Saw my DS with his Dyke & Uncle Dyke  My DS is in H Co and we are from VA. Number 11 from our family but, as with children, each experience is different. Great having this forum to share and embrace technology. Let's have a Forum FaceTime gathering spot during Parent's Weekend!

Thank you! :thumb: I was worried about leaving out 450 Burma Road. We were told the package wouldn't get there without it. My Rat needs a watch ASAP and its easier/faster to send it from Amazon. Thanks again!

My son is also in H Company. Praying for unity and strength for these kids. So glad that this week is over and they are better for it.

rat athletes

Hello All,
I have been following this thread with great interest and excitement for all your children. My DS has given his verbal commitment for the class of 2013, as a recruited athlete (I don't know how to start a new thread so I am asking here) Are any of your DS/DD participating in Fall sports? If so, how are they managing with all the activities and their sport? I am so excited about his choice of VMI. I can tell from this forum that the support will be enormous for my DS, as well as my husband and self. We visited this past summer and LOVED the school and everyone we met.

The dreaded watch -my son's battery went out that first week - remember dashing around - wal mart saved the day that new market sunday! My son is in H co too! Yes I concur - we need to have a meet and greet in person - I do hope to attend all home games this year and September is full of them! I appreciate the many kind words - I have just tried to share what we learned, helpful tips, without giving away anything - VMI is such a special place, for those who attend, make that choice, and stay -it will enrich their lives beyond anything you could expect. For those of you without military - lifestyle experience I will say, the VMI family atmosphere, is what your cadet will find, no matter what service they commission in! - larrys mom

We plan on tailgating Parent's Weekend. Driving in from Michigan for the weekend. Maybe we can somehow identify ourselves on our tent/car, etc.? Does anyone know what the permit privilege is for the Annapolis game. I am in Baltimore that week and may arrange to stay over for the game.

According to the Superintendent's Update (July 2012, p. 2), All cadets will travel by bus to Annapolis 22 Sept. Kickoff at 3:30pm. Restrictions lifted for the weekend, all cadets, including rats, will be granted a weekend. Rats must return to VMI by 10:00pm on Sunday (Sept 23). All other cadets must return by 11:30pm. Return transportation to VMI will be provided after the game for cadets unable to make weekend arrangements.
