VMI STP

That is a big incentive, not just in the wallet. It gives those kids great opportunities. Just something to think about though..those scholarships are GPA based in order to remain in effect and stay in the program from what I've read. Make sure DS picks his toughest class to have during STP so it will lighten the load once classes begin. DS is shooting for the scholarship program after he gets the first semester under his belt. His SATs didn't make the cut so he is opting not to test out of Calc 1 if possible etc and is planning on taking the dreaded Eng comp class for STP so he stands a chance at it. It may be the "chicken route", but I understand the logic. He is unsure of his HS foundation because of his SATS even though he took all APs and has a high GPA. I am glad for you and your DS. That is quite the accomplishment going in. You should be VERY proud!!:thumb:

Bikuds: Thanks. I am proud -- and a little worried. To keep that scholarship, you have to maintain a 3.5 average -- which is going to be tough with everything else going on in the Rat year! Good thing he is going to be a history major -- he loves it and scored 5s in all the history AP tests. I can't imagine being an engineering major and maintaining a 3.5, but then, I am a lawyer!

But the Honors program there is a wonderful program from everything I've read. It will test him and is a good thing. Indeed, that is a big part of the reason that he wants to go there: to be tested. We shall see. As to your DS, I don't think that is the chicken route at all. He is just being smart! Good for him. I hope my DS will do the same.

STP e mail

DS received an informational email today about STP explaining the benefits etc. What has me a little(just a little) baffled is that on the header it showed all the hundreds of the recipients email addresses. The privacy thing isn't an issue to me at all, but there is well over 600 maybe 700 email addresses listed. Just curious if most of these kids accepts an appointment what they would do with them?. Reality is a percentage won't and that is what they are planning on I assume, otherwise the Rat Mass this fall will be massive.

I know from informational sessions that VMI, like other state schools are having to raise their popluation, I believe VMI has targeted (and has approved from state) a population of 1500-1600. Therefore, in recent years, class sizes were growing and each has been largest at institute - but I would be very suprised if this year's incoming class was over 600 - therefore - either its appointments given or multiple email addresses for each prospective cadet.
Historically each STP has had about 50% of incoming class - will be very interesting to see this year! larrys mom

Just makes me and DS curious as too how this will affect room assignments. I think he should just plan on being crammed in with 5 come fall and then if its less he can consider it a win:smile:

That's a good call. We had 5 in the beginning in a TINY room. When we put our racks down we had no room to move. That guy left though and now we're down to four. At least 1 person in your room is likely to leave so don't worry. 1 room in my company eventually had 1 person left in it for example
