Considering the Summer Transition program for our son. We are 11 hours away. i am thinking we drive together to Roanoke and July 5 he drives to Lexington and I fly home? I figure Moms are not to involved in the check in process… any one have any experience to share?

STP is a very good program. Nice to get the lay of the land at the Institute and my DS (2023) was glad to get one of his required classes complete before the Rat Line. There are a few threads on here about STP and if you still have questions please PM me and I will try to assist.

DS did STP in 2018. Although as his mom I drove him there from 8 hours away, plenty of kids didn’t have parents come with them as they were allowed to have cars. Wishing your son a great experience at STP and VMI as my DS prepares to commission and graduate this coming week

STP is pretty laid back compared to matriculation. You may want to go and walk around to talk to people, view post facilities, and go to the bookstore. Access to barracks is also relaxed. However, there are plenty without parents. I recommend STP to help with class load and to meet other friendly faces before the ratline. Many of my son's friends at VMI are from the STP program. The physical fitness sessions may help as well but are not overly challenging. There's no reason to visit after drop-off and/or go to pick up.

It depends on what you want/need out of STP. If you are looking to get a few classes out of the way to make it easier his rat year then STP is a good option. If he is unfamiliar with post, or doesn't know anyone else going, then STP is a good option.

My son has been going to VMI since he was an infant, he already knows many cadets in the corps and he was a dual enrollment student in HS so for him STP wasn't going to give him any advantages.

I think the STP is a great program, but it's not for everyone.
