VP Nom

So I'm really trying to figure out how LOA recipients work into this. Everybody on here says, that if you have a LOA and get any nomination that you are guaranteed to get in. So lets use this example, the candidate who receives a LOA does receive a MOC nomination, but the MOC has nominated another candidate as his "principal" nominee (assuming this particular MOC uses that system). Would the LOA winner then go into the national pool of the 150 who are selected based upon WCS or get one of the 5 VP noms? (This again assumes they are not qualified for any of the service connected nomination appointment slots) What if the person who has the LOA, really doesn't have an extremely high WCS? (Think SOME recruited athletes, not ALL) Do they trump all of the other potential candidates who are in the national pool with a higher WCS? I guess this is one reason why the service academies will severely limit the number of LOAs they give out, if they know in the end they could have to reach into this limited bucket of 155 slots. I would also think that this is the same bucket that they would have to pull in certain "diversity" candidates? Again, do they just assign these extra "points" for this to get increase the WCS or can it just trump others? If a MOC sends in an unranked slate of his 10 nominees, then it sounds like the candidate with the LOA could automatically get the appointment, even if he/she does not have the highest WCS of the 10 nominees, too. Or do the academies have to offer the appointment in an unranked slate to the candidate from the district with the highest WCS? Boy I'm beginning to see just how difficult it is to get one of those coveted national pool slots when there are so many who are competing for it. I really feel for all of the outstanding candidates who aren't able to get in when all is said and done.

Don't Sweat it....

Don’t sweat it. Since the beginning of the selection processes for the Class of 2017, WP admin had announced doing away with LOA as well as rolling admissions. In its place LOE would be given to promising applicants and the bulk of the class would receive their BFE or TWE by the beginning of March. There have been a few LOAs given to those who were injured just before R-Day, (they already had been given an appointment and accepted it) or injured shortly after Beast begun they where injured.

CASE: Last year there was a post of a promising basketball player who tore his ACL a week before R-Day. When he healed and Dodmerd gave him a green light and he was given a LOA for the next class. All he needed was a Nom. Again.

CASE: Last year there was a post of promising prior enlisted who received a LOA. Rightfully so.

What you do have control over is bringing those ACT/SAT score as high as you possibly can. This will increase your WCS, thus increase your status on the NWL.

I know this can be very fuzzy. This is why Service Academy Forum is here. Its a great place to ask questions and sort through things.

I hope this helps.

LOA winners often win the vacancy; however, smart congressional reps will start using a principal nomination to get the LOA and another in. Notice on Buff's post - nominated vacancies comes to about 850, then there are the top 150 by WCS off the NWL, which leaves roughly 200 in the class for WP's choosing. If an LOA doesn't win one of those other spots, then they would come in under one of those other 200 that WP chooses along with individuals like USMAPS that don't win their district. It's not a whole lot of flex room once you consider the size of the prep school which is one reason for the cut back on LOAs.
