My DS was EA waitlisted and received a phone call from the crew coach on March 22nd letting him know that he was appointed to the class of 2020. His Bear's Den was updated about a week later with his appointment letter. It's my understanding that from this point forward, anyone that receives an appointment off of the waitlist will be notified in the same manner, via phone call and their Bear's Den will be updated accordingly. To anyone who got an appointment off the waitlist, how were you notified?
First of all, congratulations on accepting your appointment to USAFA!
IMHO, the most proactive and professional thing you could do at this point is reach out to USCGA and let them know that you have accepted an offer to USAFA and request to be removed from the waitlist. In the event that USCGA would offer you an appointment from your position on the waitlist - which you would in-turn decline - this process might take a day or two away from whomever USCGA chooses from the waitlist after you decline the offer. I know it might be a point of pride to know that you were officially offered an appointment, but the semantics of actually receiving the offer is relatively meaningless at this point. Just take pride in knowing that you, along with every single candidate on the waitlist, have been vetted and is deserving of an appointment. You know firsthand the stress involved in being on the waitlist...removing yourself from the list might lessen the stress on another candidate a bit sooner - ONE TEAM, ONE FIGHT - Go Bears!

If you've already accepted an appointment from another academy, you should immediately decline all other academy appointments.
Not true. The academies sometimes drag their feet in the application process. Kids are free (and wise) to grab that bird in the hand, then change their mind if a better offer comes along. It's no different than putting a tuition or housing deposit down at a college and then backing out when an Academy appt. is received.
The applicant has to do what is best for them. The academies certainly do as they please.
And don't assume that kid is taking someone else's spot away. The academies offer more appts. than they will use, knowing there will be some refusals and no shows. A spot that opens up in a case like this is often not filled at all.
Then don't accept the appointment before the deadline until you are sure. You have until May 1.
What possible reason is there to accept a USAFA appointment and then wait around to see what other offers come in, knowing you have already accepted the USAFA's offer? IMHO (and I believe the academies encourage this as well) any applicant who has multiple academy appointment offers who accepts the appointment to one should immediately decline the others.
Keep in mind I'm not talking about receiving an appointment, I'm talking about after signed acceptance papers have been sent by the applicant to an academy, which effectively ends the process.
Any attempt to acquire other academy appointments at that time are selfish and unnecessary.
Kids need to do what is best for them, not what you think is best.
Kids need to do what is honorable, that includes declining other academy appointments when you have already accepted another.
Do you also recommend accepting a prom date or even a marriage proposal (causing the other party to start preparations for the big day/night) all the while you were just waiting for another date to take her place? After all, that is what would be best for you.
Very honorable.
Nine appointments were tendered on Friday to applicants on the wait list and I imagine there will be more this week as the dust settles from the May 1st accept/decline deadline. All applicants currently on the wait list should be receiving an e-mail tomorrow updating them on the process.
All applicants who accepted their spot on the wait list were notified (see e-mail below) that we would continue to fill vacancies in the class until June 1st. All applicants will be notified when the wait list has been closed. Obviously applicants who are no longer interested in being considered for an appointment should withdraw their name from consideration as was requested in the same message.
>>>Thank you for accepting your spot on the wait list for our Class of 2019. As outlined in your notification letter, I would encourage you to submit an updated academic transcript by February 1st and the easiest way to get this (or any new material) in your record is to send it directly to your Admissions Officer via e-mail. Please note, our wait list is not ranked, so all applicants positively replying will be considered equally for appointment should spots become available in the class between now and June 1st. We commonly outreach to applicants appointed off the wait list with a phone call followed up with an e-mail directing them to an online decision letter similar to your wait list notification letter. If you decide in the future that you are no longer interested in attending the Coast Guard Academy, we would appreciate knowing this so we may withdraw you from the wait list and learn where you've decided to attend college instead.<<<
Go back and re-read the original post.
Re class size, we were told back in February that they were shooting for roughly 300.
The issue has nothing to do with the President. It has to do with operational requirements and filling officer racks out in the fleet.yeah, my brain remembers the number 296...hoping for 305! I remember reading that Pres. Obama wants to increase the size...as well as diversity!
