I am aware there are candidates who are waitlisted for both Naval Academy and Naval Academy Prep. This dad has has many questions about the process, but would anyone know if these two categories are competing against each other…or are they two separate groups?

At any rate just gonna embrace the fact that it’s not over. The Prep school is the preferred choice by this dad, for my sons social and academic transition to the rigors of Annapolis. Maybe it will work out

The waitlists are separate - those on the Naval Academy waitlist are waiting for potential spots at the Naval Academy; those on the NAPS waitlist are waiting for potential spots at NAPS - outside of some EXTREMELY unusual circumstance, they are not mixed. Reminder: NAPS isn't for those that "just missed" receiving a USNA appointment.

Also hanging out there is the potential of those who decline Foundation Scholarships, and that may mean there would be some additional Fpindatiom Scholarships offered. No waitlist for those, I suspect, just an internal “just in case” list.

In regards to your reminder, where can I find officially what it’s for ? I believe I understand the military aspect, and the recruited athlete aspect….but evidently I don’t understand the non military/non recruited athlete perspective.

NAPS isn’t a ‘holding ground’ for extra USNA candidates they wanted to appoint, but don’t have enough room for.

NAPS is for candidates that they want at USNA, but that need a little ‘something’ to ensure they will succeed once they get there.

Often, it’s academics related. Sometimes it’s the course work taken in high school or the school profile. Or, someone who has been out of academia. But it can be for any reason needed for the candidate that they want, to set them up for their best success next year at USNA.

Some background reading:

USNA sees something in these candidates they know they want in a future class, and typically have concerns about academic readiness for USNA. Prior enlisted are brought up to speed and prepared for transition from enlisted ranks, though some are strong enough to be direct admits. Recruited athletes are given a strong foundation to help them survive the double whammy of D1 collegiate sports and the rigors of an active duty military academy.
