Waiver but no nomination

Hi all, this is my first post. Last week I was notified they put in for a waiver as I was medically DQ'd. One thing is I don't have a nomination. What does this mean? I was resigned that it was game over with no nomination and a DQ. Was already focusing on my backup plan. How can you get in without a nomination?

A nomination is required to be appointed. While there is a chance that USAFA will assign you to the Vice President nomination (assuming that you applied) or another nomination source, the number of these nominations are relatively low. USAFA could come through for you but, IMO, you are doing the correct thing by making sure that plan B is solid and ready to go.

Good luck - remember there are multiple paths that lead to the goal of commissioning as an officer in the USAF.

Does anyone have tips for getting a nomination? If nothing comes I'll be attending Colorado School of Mines but intend to apply again. Does reapplying as a college student hurt you? I'll be graduating top 5% of my class with a 4.0+ gpa, 30 ACT, 4 AP classes, wrestling & football varsity, captain, eagle scout, SGA VP. My CFAs were great too. Any advice would be great.

One idea would be to join their AFROTC program. That would give you another nomination source. Also to take classes similar to USAFA first year, and do well. The academies love reapplicants, no it doesn’t hurt you. It shows tenacity!

@yessir516 My advice would be to start as early as possible. The portal for the USAFA application opens in July but most nomination sources have the materials open year round. The sooner you turn the application in the better.

Pretty surprising you didn’t get a nom. Did you get everything complete and I’m on time? They are interested if they are requesting a waiver. You have a shot.

Yes, everything was submitted on time. My district is supposed to be one of the most competitive with hundreds of applicants according to my MOC and what I've read on this board. Will I even get a TWE if my application is complete but no nom and medical DQ or do they assume you know you're TWE'd because you don't have the nom? Hopefully this waiver process may indicate I'm under consideration though.

You’ll definitely get a TWE to close the loop if you do not get appointed.

I’ll defer to the BGOs and ALOs on this forum, but your stats look competitive, you don’t have a TWE yet, and if they are in fact pursuing a waiver, they have some interest in you. I’d say you are a still in the game. Good luck!
