Hey. I’m currently an MS3 Cadet in process to contract this spring semester. I am not competing for a scholarship, I am planning to contract as a non-scholarship cadet and to attend Advanced Camp this summer. I have an interesting story being in the military and wanted some insight Incase someone has any expertise. I joined AD in 2013 first out of high school and prior to my enlistment my mother passed away at home of a heart attack while I was there and it was tough on me. I elected to go to basic training anyway to start my career. Got through basic got to AIT. Drew a couple pictures of crosses with “RIP MOM”, my instructor had us keep our journals in the class and I guess he inspected them after class and he turned in my notebook to my PSG and then my Commander got a hold of it. I got called into his office the same day and he asked, “what happened with my mom?” and I told him, “she passed before my enlistment”. He then voluntold me to talk to a behavior health specialist and schedule the appt the next day. I then went and meet with the SSG there who said I had “unresolved grief” over my mother’s death and wanted to “get me help” and I ended up staying in a hospital off base for counseling for grief. I didn’t want to be there but I got stuck there for 4 days. Got back to the company got back enrolled in class and ended up failing my MOS test and eventually discharged. I rejoined in 2017 and had to complete basic again and shipped to a different AIT. I had to get a waiver for enlistment because of an RE3 code. And I had to disclose of my situation with the counseling but I didn’t have any problems enlisting in regards to that. I don’t have any paperwork from that hospital visit in 2013, my recruiter tried to contact them and they supposedly delete paperwork dating that far back. I turned in my documents from prior counseling statements from my old Commander in AIT. I know that information is on my 2807 and 2808. I did get a waiver for that counseling once I checked my 2808 forms. Will this hinder my chances in contracting with ROTC? I was on no kind of meds at any junction of time. I have no formal diagnosis of depression nor have I ever been to counseling before or after that incident. I’m a junior, 3.2 GPA. If anyone has any information or has gone through a similar process I would enjoy your feedback. Thanks!

I'm not a doctor, in the military or ROTC, but it sounds to me like you won't have a problem regarding those past issues. Best wishes!

Haha yeah. I didn’t have any issues enlisting into the military in 2017. I just heard DODMERB is pretty picky about things.

As I said, I'm not an expert, but the reason I commented is because my DD is a sophomore cadet and in HS had anxiety and was on medication. She received a waiver, so, based on you having no diagnosis or meds, it doesn't seem like it will be an issue.
Sorry about your Mom; sounds like you had a rough start to your military career. Are you in the reserves now?

Oh wow, well hearing something that is hope building. Did you get much information from her regarding that process? And yes, I am currently in the National Guard. Hoping to contract to secure an active duty slot.

When you get a few more messages posted you can private message me and I'll give you any information I can on the process we went through that might help you.

My son is having to get a waiver because the went to a councilor a few times his sophomore and beginning junior of high school. I would love to message you and

It’s definitely hopeful hearing your child’s story. One can’t help but worry.

Does this help at all or will a few councilor appointments ruin it all ? No diagnosis and no issues currently!

Have you even started DODMERB yet? You can't go to Advanced Camp this Summer if you are not contracted, and you can not be contracted if you are not DODMERB qualified. Advanced Camp slating is happening now. If you haven't started DODMERB yet, you most likely will not be contracted by the end of this semester. Does your most recent DD214 have an RE3 code? If not, then you should be good to go to contract on that front. If that inpatient treatment is disclosed, DODMERB is going to request remedials (medical records) for it. If you can't provide that information, you will not be qualified by DODMERB. Do you have the waiver paperwork, from your MEPs physical? That may help, and have information from your inpatient treatment. I don't know all the information on your current status, so I am giving you my thoughts based on the provided information. You need to talk to your ROO and MS3 advisor, on your DODMERB status and likelihood of contracting this semester.
