Walk on VS Scholarship?

As we are staring down deadlines, I think my son is getting cold feet about committing to his choices. He has reservations about making a decision that will affect the next 9 years. He’s wondering if he should/could just schedule the ROTC classes and still participate without the scholarship? He’s worried he will start on scholarship, decide he’s not interested, and then have to enlist or pay back. My understanding from my reading and our discussions with the different units is that this would not be the case until after field training for junior year? I feel he won’t get out of it what he’s seeking until sophomore year really. Any advice? Thanks!

Army ROTC gives you a free first year "try before you buy" pass on a four year scholarship. The Army pays for your first year, and the cadet has no obligation until the first day of the sophomore year. Cadet can walk away from ROTC after the frosh year and no payback.

That is a pretty good no-obligation deal.

Read the contract paperwork. It is all there.

From DAF 597-3 (If that is the current form)

What about AFROTC? And thank you!

AFROTC is the same. If you withdraw from ROTC before the first day of sophomore year there is no obligation.

I think they all give you one free year. If you decide not to continue, there are no problems So the worst thing that can happen if you quit after the first year is that you get one free year of school. I'm pretty sure there are people who scam the system by getting one free year and then quitting
