Got news from DGD. TAC called her in to inform her her academic/pe/military scores for first part of her plebe fall semester are very good. She was awarded walking privileges for Columbus/Indigenous People’s Day weekend. Brava! Her favorite class is calculus. She told the TAC she’d probably just hang around the barracks. Response: get off post.

Question: will most of the upper classmen get passes that weekend and be gone? Will there be few cadre to bear down on her?
Question: we probably won’t get family there. What can she do off-post on her own?

The TAC is right.
Walk to Highland Falls. Not much there, but some restaurants that would love to see her. Andy’s for breakfast. Parks and Shades are pretty good. Avoid Dong Fong. 🤢 DD swore by their Orange chicken, but she’s a walking garbage disposal.
Maria Bohnitas if she likes Mexican food. The owner is a very nice lady. Tony’s is okay Italian.
Bear Mountain Bakery for baked goods.
If she has a sponsor see if she can hang out there and do laundry.

100% go get breakfast at Andy’s. It is worth the walk, and the peanut butter cup pancakes are one of my favorite meals ever

Hmm--Plebes have walking privileges every weekend, regardless of performance. I do know for a fact that everyone has a non-chargeable (doesn't count for your total number of allowed passes) pass for Columbus Day weekend, so she could go anywhere she wants and stay overnight. I am glad your granddaughter is doing well.

Our DD got into the habit of walking to the Dunkin in Highland Falls, grabbing a table and studying or working on papers for walking privs. The Wi-Fi is good there and she was happy to be off post for several hours at a time. We are from CA so we only get out there a few times a year. She has her favorites at all the restaurants in town. Well, not quite all.... Burgers from Park, pasta at Schade's. West Point Pizza, Tony's are all good choices. I haven't heard her mention Sushi King for a while but she used to enjoy them for delivery with American Burrito. As UH mentioned, have her bond with her sponsor when possible. Pretty good resource.

Sushi King has okay Korean food. I think it’s also where the commissary gets its sushi.
I strongly encourage Cadets to do as your DD. If they can only walk, go outside Thayer gate and get away.

Translated in Mandarin Dong Fong means "go elsewhere" LOL

My DS mentioned the other day that the President of Albania was at lunch and granted a non-chargeable pass for the Corps on Columbus Day weekend. He said the Corps went wild!

Thank you.

Stay away from Dong Fong many have gotten sick after eating there. American Burrito is nice and you get yourself painted on their wall if you can eat their super burrito in one sitting.

The American Burrito restaurant is closed. Delivery only.
