Good evening everyone. I have already accepted my USAFA appointment, but I understand that anything can happen between now and the end of basic. Just in case anything serious happens, I plan to put the $400 deposit into Virginia Tech. I am willing to lose the deposit money, better safe than sorry. I believe that many others have placed a deposit in a civilian university while already committed to a service academy. It there any legalities that prevent me from doing this? Are there any extra steps I should take after I place my deposit? When should I inform the university that I will not attend their university after I successfully complete basic? Moreover, I have also received a 4 year type 2 AFROTC scholarship as well. Am I allowed to accept this scholarship (charged to VT)? Will the AFROTC scholarship immediately cancel when I report to I-day or is it a manual process? Thank you so much and have a great night!

If it works the same way as Army ROTC did, you forfeit your rotc scholarship as soon as you accept your academy appointment. My son did deposit at a civilian college as an injury backup. He had a four year Army ROTC scholarship to that college but, as soon as he accepted USMMA, he lost the Army ROTC. This was a known thing, if yours is the same, you should be able to find it noted online somewhere.

In case of injury, our plan would be for him to enroll at the civilian college at full cost. If he stayed there, he would hopefully reapply for a three year ROTC.

The order of things was perhaps a bit simpler/cleaner for us as he first accepted his rotc, then deposited civilian, then later accepted the academy. So we didn’t deposit after already accepting the academy. All we have left to do now is tell the civilian college no thank you after he completes indoc.

From what I understand, your first day at USAFA will cancel your AFROTC scholarship. Placing a deposit at VT won’t hurt, and I don’t think it would be a bad idea. However, after you’ve completed the summer at USAFA, I would decline your admission at VT so you aren’t charged admission.
