Does anybody know whether members of the military are allowed to invest in marijuana related stocks? I heard of some cadets having to sell these stock before commissioning. Not looking for anyones political view on weed, but am curious if these investments are authorized.

The policy is clearly evolving. I would certainly recommend that a candidate not go out of his/her way to acquire such securities, lest they jeopardize an appointment.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Under-21 troops are still able to invest in beer companies. Everyone is allowed to invest in pharma stock, even if they don't have a current medical prescription.

Investment does not equal consumption.

As far as having "heard of cadets having to sell "weed stocks" prior to commission", that's a ridiculous rumor. Don't believe rumors. :)

Unless you have to file financial declaration documents under ethics statutes or regulations, there is no way anyone knows how a member of the military invests their money.

Generally, financial declaration documents are filed by higher ranking officers, and those involved with contracting for the services.

I have served for 28 years in our Army. I have never filed such documents, and not one person or entity has ever asked for or seen my investment portfolio. Additionally, how I choose to invest my money has never come up, not once in all those years.

From what i have read and heard, buying stocks directly in a marijuana company is still an issue. The issue that was freaking out people was the talk that investing in a mutual fund that had marijuna stocks in it could hurt you. The problem with that is that Mutual funds include many many different stocks and I would imagine buy and sell throughout the year. Even if you knew what stocks they owned on January 1, it doesnt mean you would know what stocks they owned on December 31. That was eventually clarified and mutual funds arent included when looking at marijuana stocks. So you cant investment in MJ Doobie Inc, but you can investment in Janus Tech Mutual Fund that invests in MJ Doobie Inc. However I have to imagine that sometime in the future they will have Janus Weed Fund which will be made up of mostly marijuana stocks and that will be a no no assuming nothing changes in the law.
