Tough news. The military is a utilitarian environment, “the good of the many outweighs the good of the few.” The focus is the mission: safely bringing in the next class, minimizing disruptions to training and education through astute risk management and continuing to pump out well-prepared junior officers to the Army. Morale of parents, unfortunately, is way down the scale of “goods.” I am sorry to see this, but at least they are definitively setting expectations early.
It’s only in the last few decades that “hoopla” and parent-centric events have grown into what is expected today. DH took the train solo from Philly, taxi to Gate 1, walked in and reported in for USNA induction. He didn’t see his parents until winter holiday. He was well-launched by his parents. Different parenting styles today. Not wrong. Just different.
