Hi everyone!

I had a quick question regarding the recommendations that West Point requires, specifically the P.E evaluation. According to the West Point instruction packet and my MALO, the P.E letter can be written by any physical activity instructor, like a karate or dance instructor, but not a coach. I'm having some trouble understanding what the difference is between the two and was hoping someone on this forum could clarify!

I would ask my MALO but he does take some time to respond and was hoping I could get a quick answer here.

Thanks!

More often than not the actual Instructor is a credentialed teacher.

Coaches have a vested interest in evaluating a candidate more leniently than an instructor, since the candidate is a member of that coach's team, and as Walman said, coaching credentials are less rigorous than those for instructors.

USMA collects and analyzes data extensively to fine tune the process of evaluating candidates. Somewhere along the way, USMA determined that coaches were not the best evaluators.

It also explains why USMA is adamant that the science SOE be completed by a Physics or Chemistry teacher, and not Biology or other science.

If my coach also happens to be a PE teacher, would he then be able to fill out my PE SOE?
