What’s on your bookshelf? (Share your recommended reading!)

My current three:

Hard copy: "Turkish Reflections," by Mary Lee Settles, an American who traveled Turkey extensively.

Audible: "Life Undercover," by Amaryllis Fox, a former CIA operative in the Middle East.

Kindle: "Atomic Habits," by James Clear, who himself is an impressive story.

And for professional military reading, a site I have posted before, a compilation of various service recommended reading lists and reviews. It is not an official site, but was started by a USNA grad as a convenience.

Speaking of Churchill, "Hero of the Empire" is a fantastic read. It covers his breathtaking escapades during the Boer War, where he was a correspondent and not a soldier. Churchill was a brilliant, flawed, complicated leader. Just what the Brits, and the Allies, needed during WWII.

Sir I read Hero of the Empire this summer! I am currently reading Madame Fourcade's Secret War: The Daring Young Woman Who Led France's Largest Spy Network Against Hitler for pleasure. It's about a French woman who was the only female to lead a sector of the French Resistance during WWII, Alliance. She is badass. She and four other people built a whole section from scratch. The stories are crazy! A general (Giraud) who got evacuated at great peril to members of Alliance who helped make it happen, who was then hauled to Gibraltar, and expected to take over the French forces in North Africa from Eisenhower! Getting away from the Gestapo by the skin of her teeth, multiple times! Mostly it gives me great hope that democracy and free will can be assaulted and damaged but cannot fail if enough people like her find one another and stick their necks out.

Also I'm about halfway through Leadership Secrets of Attilla the Hun. It's funny but also making me think.

I'm a bit of Civil War buff, but I never read a biography of U.S. Grant. I tackled Ron Chernow's 900+ page tome on Grant. Just outstanding. I finished it convinced that Grant is one of the greatest American patriots ever. I highly recommend it. I got the paperback which was a great wrist exercise. You might want to consider the kindle version. :)

The Kindle has been great so far, so I decided to try something else too today: audiobooks. Planning on listening to them in the car. Got a long drive in a couple weeks! Decided to get Dune for my first audiobook

Kindle

Fat Leonard: How One Man Bribed, Bilked, and Seduced the U.S. Navy by Craig Whitlock

Scandalous, Sorry, Sad. Nice dining menus though.

Was up at Gettysburg this past weekend. Stop by the visitor center to wait on my son and his friends.

Found

The Maps of Gettysburg: An Atlas of the Gettysburg Campaign, June 3 - July 13, 1863

Will be my entertainment for a while.

Ivy, I posted a link to the DoD MWR online joint library, I think I’m Off-Topic. Plenty of professional reading, but all the pleasures of fiction. Uses the Libby app. You can read on any device with Libby app or on Kindle. Free. Libby’s excellent if you haven’t used it. You can run searches on author or titles, look through new acquisitions with filters, look at collections, put things on hold, download if needed, adjust screen preferences. Three-week checkout time.

If you still have your account and password at hometown library, you can search for that library in Libby and add it with a one-time login of your hometown library account. Or if you have joined the local library where you are. My Maryland library system account includes Kanopy, classic art house films, foreign language films, etc.

Thanks, I’ve been using DoD Libby on my kindle for a couple months. Also like to have a couple physical books to read from too (and they look good on my bookshelves)
