what are my chances??

I hate to sound like a broken record given what has already been said in reference to this question, but I’m losing sleep over this and I figured this subreddit would be the perfect place to turn to to garner some answers.

What are my chances?

It’s been my dream to go to usna since my brother got his appointment to the academy back in 2016. he’s now a marine officer, and i’m a senior in high school with my application submitted. I know this subreddit can’t give definitive answers as to my odds of an appointment, but i was hoping for some guidance/ reassuring thoughts about if i’m a good candidate.

For reference, I’m in nj in a ultra comp district for navy

My stats are :

act superscore : 34 composite, 35 english 31 math 36 reading 34 science

1420 sat, 690 math 730 reading

94.05 gpa (100 point scale)

12 ap classes taken, including calc ab, physics 1, lang, lit, stats, bio, chem, apush, apwh, gov, compsci a, and spanish)

i’ve only gotten 2 b’s: calc and physics my junior year, and the rest of my transcript is a’s

passed cfa, passed dodmerb

activities: 4 varsity letters for swimming, 1 year captain, 4 years swimming, part of a national club team for swimming, part of nhs, part of spanish honors society, founded and president of a club i created dedicated to rock climbing, i have 300 hours of community service, ap scholar w honor award, and i have a bunch of other clubs.

could not do boys state (conflicted w a big swim meet)

im also being recruited for crew, but i’m not sure how much that helps my chances

i’ve had both my senator and congressional nomination interviews and they went well, especially the congressional one.

however, i have a question that has yet gone unanswered.

I’m also applying to army and merchant marine in addition to usna. for my congressional interview, i listed my top choice as usna, then usma, then usmma.

however, i’ve recieved an loa from merchant marine and im worried that my moc might give me a nomination to only merchant marine. I also got a loe from usma and a 3q letter, but my interviewers didnt really talk about usma so i’m not sure how likely they are to give me a nom there.

are my worries realistic? im praying that my moc gives me a nom to navy, but im deathly afraid that they’ll just give me a nom to usmma.

anyways, thank you for your help in advance, and go navy!!!!!

your chances will be anything from 0 to 99%(never a guarantee) , no matter how good your resume is on paper. Yours is definitely extremely competitive, but it won't matter if theres 10 other people with 4.0s/1550s applying for noms as well. You've worked as hard as you could, just hope and enjoy your senior year. If it comes to the worst, it's clear to me navy would have lost a good one :)

for your loa thing, I would assume your MOCs would attempt to honor your choices first before trying to fulfill the LOA nom to USMMA.

Yes, you are a very good candidate. No one can tell you if you will or will not receive an appointment, except the SAs themselves. I hope you have a Plan B and Plan C.

I recommend to all of my students to put together a Plan A - B - C. "A" is the SAs, Plan "B" is one or several ROTC scholarships, and then "C" is the set of civilian universities that you apply to as part of the ROTC application process. I have had three students who won a scholarship or simply joined ROTC on campus (as part of Plan C) and then won an appointment (3 of 3) the following year. Some 25 - 30% of all cadets/mids at the SAs did not come directly out of high school as many attended a prep school, or a year or two of college, prior to becoming cadets/mids.

So, I think you have a very good chance. But, now, focus on what you can control. Update the schools if anything 'newsworthy' happens (such as an award or a new promotion). Keep up your workout routines and avoid 'senior-itis' -- plus, support others who are going through the same waiting game as you are.

Best of luck!

You look good to me, well, as good as the other candidates with a resume like yours. I teach in a hotbed of officer recruiting, in fact, my school is just down the highway from the Pentagon. I write 12-24 college recommendation letters a year. None are for service academies however. Over 90 percent of my students are on free and reduced, some recent immigrants, and all but four this year are non-white minorities. They are the marginalized. They are the forgotten and some are outcasts. Most can't get their core subject teachers to write a recommendation for them.

Why do I mention this? When a student asks for a recommendation, I say, send me your resume. I also have them fill out a form I created which helps me write the best recommendation possible. I have two students waiting to hear from Hopkins and one waiting for UVA. I'm betting they will get in. Others I have written for this year will get into any of the state schools they applied to. I teach them to write and speak to their audience. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are important and lend to credibility.

You copy/pasted your post here from the post you put on Reddit. Probably nobody else here will mention this and I'm not giving you a hard time, per se, but know your audience. It looks like you keyboarded this on your phone. Phones have a CAP function. I'm sure your application, recommendation letters, and all other materials are 4.0 and this is just a message board. But, this isn't Reddit.

P.S. What did the Redditors say?

I was going to give him a hard time about Reddit, but chose not to today. 😅

… but im deathly afraid that they’ll just give me a nom to usmma. …
.
You seem smart, so I’m sure that you know that a single Nom to USMMA is a possibility …. So if you are not keen on going there, it probably should have never been on your application schedule … and by all means … don’t let other SA Nom seekers know how you feel about it …

😎

Ouch. Please don’t even consider a school you’re “deathly afraid” of being accepted to. It’s not fair to your future classmates, especially the ones for whom it’s a first choice.

My apologies for my grammar (capitalization and whatnot). I first wrote this post on reddit, then realized the service academy forums page were more active, and I decided to just copy and paste the post. (I was kind of hoping people on this forum wouldn’t notice I copy/pasted lol).
Thank you for your insight, and I will certainly be more mindful of my audience in the future.

No apologies needed. I'm not mad. Just trying to help you. Good luck, stick around and read the forums, and ask a bunch of questions.

I apologize if I came off as condescending in using the phrase “deathly afraid” in reference to a USMMA nom. I merely meant to say I am committed to idea of attending Navy, and any deviation from that plan would be marginally worse in my opinion. I applied to USMMA because I have the desire to serve, and I understand that USMMA is an avenue to fulfilling that goal. I mean no disrespect to any other USMMA nom seekers, and I would be overjoyed if I received an appointment there.
Thank you for your input, and I will be more conscientious of my word usage in the future!

I am only applying for USNA as far as SAs go, and still received a congressman nom for that school. If you really only one to go to one school, it's definitely possible, you just have to show the dedication, they'll see it (most likely)

From your grades and extracurricular/leadership invovlement so far, you should be qualified on all fronts. However, it is up to the admissions office to make final decisions. Congrats for doing all you can within your control!
