What are the requirements needed in order to garner a CVW invitation?

My DS is my oldest and this is the first time we’ve gone through this process.
I’ve been reading through the forum and have seen some people post about CVW invites. I know what they are but I’m curious as to how the Academy decides who to invite.

TIA

It’s a bit of a black box. My DS was invited and attended. The only information USNA had on him at the time was ACT scores, attendance at an admissions event in CA, and an informational interview with a midshipman who had returned home for Thanksgiving

safe to assume that standardized tests and demonstrated interest are at least 2 of the categories USNA considers

Thank you for your response. My son has over half of his application completed and has attended informational events.

I attended a CVW in January, 2020. USNA didn't have SAT scores or ACT yet from me (they do now). I had participated in STEM a few years ago. I received my invite in December for a late weekend in January.

If you are interested ..contact your BGO and he/she can recommend a CVW. That said, latest word is not CVW this fall, and I would speculate it will be unlikely next Spring as well. Admissions has been running a virtual CVW program, as well as various virtual awareness /admissions briefing.

COVID has changed a lot of things, but Admissions still has the mission of attracting and admitting the best Midshipman we can get. While nothing beats an in person visit, there is plenty of information available on line. In fact, the amount of information is far greater than many of us had in the past -- 40 years ago, I (and many of my classmates) applied to USNA sight unseen, and all we had was a single College catalogue to tell us about the school. I never saw USNA until I visited about halfway through NAPS.

@navyfuture25 Yes I did. I politely declined as I am in brick and mortar and football every day from 2-6pm. It wasn't feasible since it was during the school days. I called and let Admissions know I had been there personally in January.

My daughter had applied to STEM 3 times. That is the only info they had for her and she had multiple CVW invites and attended in Feb before life shut down. She had the invite before she applied to NASS. So who knows?

Thank you for your advice. My husband and I were both enlisted Navy so this is new territory for us😊
My son has never seen the Academy in person but has known since he was in 3rd grade that he wanted to be a Navy Officer, he has done all the research.
He hasn’t been assigned a BGO yet but I will pass along your advice.
Thank you Sir or Ma’am.

Like @ALF648 said above, admissions is a black box and no one knows exactly what garners a CVW invite. DS had only applied to STEM once, as a rising 9th grader. No contact with USNA since then whatsoever and he received a CVW invite last December as a junior, so before a NASS application could have been completed. They only had stats on him as an 8th grader, which included ACT scores. No clue how they pick ‘em, my advice is to not spend any time trying to figure it out. Just put forth the best possible application package. Best of luck to your son!

I won't say that how Admissions picks CVW invites but pay attention to what Old Navy BGO said. I'll add that I have never had someone who I recommended for a CVW NOT get an invite.

Thank you, to you and your DH, for your service. I would be surprised if USNA has in person CVW this fall, or even spring. This is pure speculation, based on current situation. They are having 3 hour walking tours lead by a recent graduate. The tours are by Invitation and Appointment Only. Hopefully your DS can get an invite to this. The recommendations you received above, from BGO's, would still apply.

I would make certain he is checking his Spam/Junk folder as well. USNA emails can up there as well. Good luck!

Thank you. It was our honor to serve. Greatest years of my life. Completely changed my life for the good.

Thank you Sir. My son just received an invite as of today. He is thrilled as is my husband and I.
