I'm just wondering what kind of items can I bring to BCT. Could someone give me examples? I highly doubt it, but could one be an MP3?

If you take an I-pod or mp3 to basic, they will take it from you and lock it away until after, then your squadron will decide when you can use it. Pretty much, only take what they tell you, everything else can be brought later.

I don't believe that MP3 players are allowed at all during your 4 degree year, at least until after recognition, which is in March. I wouldn't take one along.

they mean pictures. You are allowed to have 2 pictures (in frames) on your desk. They also have a cork board that can have pictures as well, but I'm not taking any to Basic with me. I can get them later.

Past Experience

I have a friend that goes to USAFA, and I just remember he could barely take anything. You may think that you can just get pictures later, but I would suggest taking them now because you really will miss your family and friends!! Also enlist people in sending you letters or have your mom do this for you (like friends and close relatives) because letters really are great moral boosters...I sent my friend probably close to 15 throughout BCT :shake:

The rule says two items, not two pictures. The items can be anything that you want, as long as they are not offensive or against policy. You can have more things in your locked storage, but only two items can be displayed in your room at any time. Friends of my son had small stuffed animals, statues, pictures frames, etc. You can have more pictures on the bulletin board on your desk also, as long as they are all pinned up in the same way. (This may vary by squad, some are more strict than others). My son actually took nothing. He literally went with the clothes on his back, his razor, his glasses, and paperwork.
My wife and I took turns writing to him every day, and we also enlisted the help of friends and family to write also. At his HS graduation party we handed out packs of 10 envelopes pre-printed with his address, and asked everyone to write to him at least 10 times. He said that the daily letters were better than any momento he would have had in his room.
At Parents Weekend we brought him a digital picture frame loaded with pics of his friends and family, and he thought that was great.

can you bring the digital picture fram right away? or do you have to wait till parent's wknd to have it brought out?

I am not sure how the digital picture frame will be looked at this year. When our son inprocessed, they were a relatively new thing, and no one really had a rule for them. I am not sure if the Academy has clarified the rule on digital frames or not. It was discussed whether they were an 'item' like a picture frame, or if they were 'media' like an MP3 player. Hopefully one of the current cadets who visit here can give us an up-to-date answer.

I think the digital picture frames are still fine. I would suggest only bringing a razor and your cell phone with along with the clothes you'll inprocess in. Just have your parents ship things to you after Basic. It's just another hassle to deal with.

just to clarify... i should bring my cell phone to I-day? I realize it'll be taken away and put in storage. I've been told to bring it by some people... but others tell me to have the parentals bring it on parents weekend.

I would personally advise to have the parentals send it later since most can't use them till Parent's weekend. I had mine do that. Some people are so jumpy to use it at the first possible moment that they are willing to have their cadre store it. My personaly advice, wait so its not another thing to worry about.

I guess I'll offer the other opinion.
I brought my phone. I had it in case anything odd happened in transit, and I had it ASAP whenever I needed/had permission to use it...and my family was moving, so it was easier to have it.
