Hi. I have been offered a spot in the Foundation Program via USNA. I have been considering NMMI, MMI, and GMC as these are the most military like schools I can pick from. What schools do USNA Foundation students usually end up at for their year of prep? It would be nice to prep with other USNA Sponsored students.Thank you.

They end up at any on the list. Pick the one that best suits you. NWP takes quiet a few and is unique as its a 1-semester program. I had some friends attend NMMI and at the time they turned out very prepared candidates (can't speak to NMMI now). Pick which one is best for you and your family's finances. The Foundation Program can help provide guidance based upon areas you need to shore up before arriving for I Day, what suits your best and what you want out of the program.

@NavyHoops thank you! I think any of those three would be fine for me as finances aren't an issue with any of the listed schools. It would, however, be nice to prep with some other usna sponsored students.

All of these schools will prepare a motivated student to receive their appointment. Have conversations with the admissions personnel and ask to speak with the cadre if possible. Know your weak spots and probe about how each program will help you become a stronger applicant.

How are you offered a Foundation Spot? Do they call you or does it go into the portal?

Thanks for posting this. According to the Foundations frequently asked questions, 50-60 prep scholarships are offered annually. DS received an offer three weeks ago. We have been communicating with Captain Hughes, Foundation BGO. He helped us with prep school admissions. DS reapplied for nomination and continued to workout regularly because he is required to take the Navy PRT before Thanksgiving. DS has a standing order: As & Bs and don’t get in trouble. Due to regional affinity, we are relocating to the Philadelphia area. There are two private boarding schools there. I hope other prep candidates can join on this thread. This is the first one from the Foundation prep class of 2022.

Thank you for the response. I’m aware of what the foundation program is. I have 2 siblings at USNA and their roommates have talked about it. My question is more of to get a sense of where other sponsored students will be doing their year of prep. I feel equal about the schools I originally listed, but if there is one where more USNA foundation prepers are choosing, then I’d like to be there. Being with fellow USNA prepers allows for the connection to build before USNA and have some people to hangout with.

I was offered a USNA Foundation Scholarship a few weeks ago and I personally chose to go to NWP. Maybe I'll see you there, maybe I won't, but hopefully we both succeed in getting our appointments next year!

So what makes the difference between a student as to whether they are selected for a Foundation Program or they are selected to go to NAPS?

NAPS is usually where recruited athletes go. NAPSTERS are enlisted Navy personnel on a Naval Base. Foundation Sponsored students have the choice between 16-12 schools depending on gender and receive a scholarship on need basis and are sponsored by the alumni foundation for the year.

If you are sponsored you really can choose whichever school you like best and not the one more likely to get you in USNA.
I can tell you MMI had 11 cadets go to USMA last year (2020). It had 29 go to West Point, 14 to Air Force, 31 Coast Guard, and 11 Merchant Marines.
It is a full year program.

Now do you need a nomination to be considered for foundation prep?
From what I've read from previous threads, you do not need a nomination to be considered for foundation prep. As long as your file reaches the admissions board you'll automatically be considered for the Foundation Program.

There were also a few to the Naval Academy. I know my DS had a friend at MMI who went to the Naval Academy.

Now what are the statistics with the self-sponsored people? Is MMI a good place to get into USNA from if you're self sponsored?

Based on my calculations, and what one of the Coast Guard self sponsored cadet from MMI told me, : Self Sponsored at MMI are at about a 60% admissions rate.
