What to do with a scholarship?

Hi. I have a question I haven't seen addressed before in the forum. My daughter received an LOA, and her nomination and will likely attend Navy.

The company that I work for offers scholarships, but will only pay them to the University or Institution the student ends up at (i.e. they send scholarship checks directly to the university, never the student or parent). Should I even bother having her fill one out? Does anyone know if there is an account at the Naval Academy that a scholarship could be used for?

Thanks for any insight!

Well, regardless of the Academy, useful for Plan B. But with regards to Plan A, I'm pretty sure that all those crisp uniforms cost a fair chunk of cash. I'm sure someone else knows more about it, but I would assume that such money could be used for all that, thereby allowing your daughter to receive a little bit more in that monthly pay.

If I'm way off, disregard everything I say.

I would recommend having your DD talk with her BGO about uniforms etc. I am also doubtful a private company will cut a check to the Federal Government.

I've heard that scholarships can be used to diminish the ACE loan that all midshipmen will be required to take in order to pay for their initial uniforms and such.

My Mid received two scholarships, and the funds were sent to the Midshipman Disbursing Office to be applied to the ACE loan. He is a Youngster this year, and his ACE loan has been paid off in full. Some scholarship organizations have stipulations regarding the purpose of the funds they award. As long as the money can be used for books, computer, and/or other things that contribute to the cost of attendance (other than tuition), you should be able to apply the scholarships at USNA. If they require the funds to be used for tuition only, they might not be able to be sent to USNA.
