I was wondering because i am 271 pounds and i want to join the military and do my part. Can anyone point me in some kind of way to an answer?

It depends on your height. Here is a weight chart that I found on one school’s AROTC site.

I am currently in AFROTC (which tends to have more strict requirements across the board), and from my experience it tends to vary. In general, you can most definitely join, but your weight will most likely play into 2 scenarios. The first is that you pass BMI (Body Mass Index) based on your body type, since every individual is different. The second is that you get your weight in regs by the time your selection for field training comes around. We have cadets that joined slightly overweight, and through lots of effort have decreased their weight significantly.
My advice is go for it. If you have the drive, you can get your weight down with no issues. As stated before though, my experience is on the Air Force side, but hopefully that provides some insight. Maybe an army cadet floating around can give you a more army-specific answer.

So unless you're a giant in height (7ft or higher), you'll probably need to shed quite a bit of weight. If you're a high school student, start looking into sports and other fitness programs to get you into shape, and the weight over time will drop. If you're a college student currently at UNF looking to join AROTC there, you're going to have to show promise of weight loss for them to consider putting you on scholarship. Either way, research some different weight loss options, talk to your doctor, and good luck on your journey!

There are 2 pieces to Army height/weight standards. Do you meet the weight on the table listed above? If not the Army tapes your neck and waist and determines your body fat percentages. Google will give you those specifics. And no, there are no other ways to determine body fat in the Army (calipers, dunk tank). You only need to meet the standards to contract. So depending on your circumstances you may have 1-2 years to make it. Good luck.

DoDMERB will on DQ someone for over/under weight if there are medical reasons surrounding your weight or co-morbid conditions resulting from it. Otherwise, Ht/Wt issues are purely administrative.:)
