I have been researching when I can schedule my DodMERB medical exam for USAFA, USMA, and USNA, and I can't seem to find a definite answer as to when I can schedule my DoDMERB medical exam for USNA. For USAFA, I know you can schedule your DoDMERB after you complete 3 of 5 application requirements, and for USMA, I understand that the process will begin after you have started an admissions file and passed the initial screening process. For USNA, do I also need to complete some requirements before I can schedule my DoDMERB medical exam?

If you have a DODMERB exam scheduled for any of the SAs that one time exam will be used for all SAs and ROTC scholarships going forward.

Are you aware, that one DODMERB exam works for all SA’s?

There is a separate DODMERB Forum Thread here:

Yes I understand that but don't they have to forward your name to DoDMERB and then DoDMERB will reach out to you regarding scheduling an exam?
Yes, the USAFA will contact them and then DODMERB will send you an email with links to set up an DODMERB account and then you schedule an Eye Exam and a Physical Exam, separately. The DODMERB portal will guide you, just read the instructions. They have local doctors on contract just for these.

What about USMA and USNA? Should I just wait for USAFA to contact DODMERB?

Whoever you have completed the most of the application with - you said USAFA is 3 or 4 sections submitted, then go with that. There is nothing you can do on your end - it is up to the SAs to contact DODMERB. My DD had completed the USNA application except the CFA by mid October and was waiting on MOC nom interviews and her LORs to be sent. Had initial ACT scores in, too. Beginning of November she received the DODMERB email to go forward. End of Nov was eye exam and Beginning of Dec was physical. Then the LONG wait - DODMERB claimed computer problems starting in early Fall and off and on thru the winter. Many others, too, experienced DODMERB results delays. Hopefully, this year all is fixed. However, DODMERB is separate from the SAs and they march to a different drummer - usu a slow drummer. Just FYSA.

You have a passive role in all this at the start. If one of the SAs decides you have reached the appropriate point in the process, it will happen as described above. Once your results are complete, other DoDMERB “customer” commissioning programs can also see the results when they wish. DoDMERB gets your data and directs DoDMETS to work with you to schedule.

DoDMERB is the DoD agency which determines if candidates meet/do not meet (Q/DQ) medical accession standards and serves as the info clearinghouse for their accession point internal customers.

DoDMETS is the contractor which coordinates with providers and with candidates. You will be scheduling your own appointments once you are assigned a provider.

Educate yourself at the primary source. Go to the DoDMERB home page and read every item and link on the left-side menu, including Contacts. No login required to do this. Info on the process, FAQs, workflows, etc.

To answer your question, specific to USNA, there is no set number of published items to complete that will trigger a DODMERB request. Thats why you cannot find it anywhere.

Thank you all so much for the responses! So to clarify, I should just work on all 3 applications this summer, and eventually ONE of the SAs will reach out to DoDMERB who will then reach out to me to take my medical exam. From there, I'm all set because the other SAs can see my medical exam results.

A good summer goal would be to knock out your CFA with a strong score. Don’t let that drag on close to the deadline; that invites bad weather, injury or illness, family emergencies, sudden unavailability of your administrator or the venue, etc. The CFA scores can be shared among SAs; if you do USNA’s you ask Admissions to send it to USMA, etc. Note that USMA requires a video of certain portions. Do the CFA for USMA, paying very careful attention to the instructions for the video. Very careful. And watch the USMA video on the CFA with special focus on form do’s and don’ts. You’ll have enough going on in the fall with SA and nom applications and interviews, plus your regular school year. And, presumably you are prudently developing alternate plans, applying for ROTC scholarships, civilian colleges, etc.

Currently the CFA is what I am most worried about haha. I am terrible at pull ups (I can only do 2), I've bought a pull up bar to try and improve and I've managed to go from 1 to 2 reps in like 3-4 weeks. I plan on working out and getting stronger and better at pull ups all summer but I fear that might not be enough time to go from 2 to 10 pull ups. Fwiw, I'm pretty confident I can max out the mile and achieve just around the average marks for the other exercises. At what point do you think I should take my final CFA?

The fall. You've got plenty of time to keep working at things (which you should be until then). Just don't wait until January and then get injured and unable to do it.

Remember, the CFA is a timed event held in a specific order with timed rest intervals. It is not one thing at a time with a bunch of rest. It is designed to test your fitness across the board. So, maxing something in practice is not the same as doing it on the CFA.

As soon as you are consistently performing a bit above average on all events. Hopefully, by then, given that you will be working on this all summer, you will have some "maximum" scores mixed in. Stay with it and you'll get there. And, I always recommend late summer/early fall if possible - since even minor injuries in fall sports really do derail people.

Between now and end of October. Then you start tempting fate, Mother Nature and Murphy’s Law.

Since you are applying to USMA, your pull-up form must be impeccable for the video, or they will not be counted. Train to that standard. Good move to get a pull-up bar, just keep at it.

Google “Stew Smith CFA” for his website and videos on YouTube. Stew is a USNA grad, former SEAL, now a professional fitness instructor. He has good info on techniques and workouts for CFA.

Take an inventory CFA, early on (now), exactly as it should be administered, to identify your weak points. The CFA is designed to progressively tax various muscle groups, and you will find you will be slower or can’t do as many reps as you can when just doing one isolated element.

What area of the US do you live? If in the southern to southwestern states and the Pacific states one may be able to complete in October. If, say, Florida, October would be better than in the summer. IMO. Northern climes, probably mid-September - but if an Indian Summer could go later.

I live in Pennsylvania

Also, how many reps of pull ups should I be able to do to pass the CFA if I can max out the mile and achieve around average marks for the other events?
