Hello, I'm sorry if this has been posted already. I received a full ROTC scholarship back in the fall. I accepted it in February (non-binding) and paid a deposit to the university where it would be applied. I was notified about my USAFA appointment in mid-April and am thrilled to be a member in 2024 class! I've heard differing opinions about when to notify "civilian universities" and ROTC funders. Several people have told me that I should hold off on informing them about my appointment "in case"--in case of injury, sickness, anything unforeseen. But I feel like notifying them is the right thing to do. I appreciate any advice from anyone else in the same boat. Thank you!

DS notified his university and NROTC shortly after accepting his USAFA appointment. He did not want to hold up scholarship for someone else waiting and your appointment letter also instructs you to notify AFROTC of your appointment. Also any injury or illness that impacts BCT would most likely impact your ability to participate in ROTC training.

Sounds like you know the right answer.
Some posts on this chapter that state that some people can’t afford to go to any college unless they receive a scholarship, I would feel terrible if I was the cause because I held on to the scholarship too long.

Congrats on your appointment and wrap yourself in bubblewrap!!!

If I remember correctly last year my DS had to decline his afrotc scholarship to accept his usafa appointment. I didn’t request my deposit back from the university until BCT was over so I knew he was good, however the university knew all about this upfront and the admissions advisor worked well with us the entire time.

You do have to decline your ROTC scholarship, although you could keep your spot at the university since it's probably non-refundable. It's an option, but my DS informed the university and ROTC that he would not be attending.
