New to West Point and need guidance on best place to stay for R Day. Looking at Newburgh or Fishkill Marriott properties. Any advice appreciated.
I agree. It was nice back in the day (30 yrs ago).Do NOT stay at cadet motel.
Closer is better since you will not be able to find parking on West Point itself. Correct me if I’m wrong, previous R-day attendees, but will everyone need to take the buses that are provided?I have not experienced R Day, but from the area and spent time at West Point. There is a cute village area in Highland Falls with a diner, a few restaurants and a Dunkin Donuts. If you can find an Airbnb within easy distance and in Highland Falls, that might be the easiest way to go. You will be close and the village will be a buzz with R Day excitement. Also, may put your DS/DD at ease being so close. If you chose Newburgh, definitely check tripadvisor and Yelp reviews...there are sketchy areas that you'll want to avoid. Congrats to your DS or DD!
Just found this on USMA site. https://s3.amazonaws.com/usma-media/inline-images/Parents/pdf/faqrdaycbt_2019.pdfCloser is better since you will not be able to find parking on West Point itself. I haven’t stayed there but it seems to get mostly good reviews. How is Bear Mountain in at the lodge?
Any experience there?
Parking at lot A just above Michie Stadium and at Buffalo Soldier Field Lot. Buses run constantly from and to both locations. Buses run directly to Ike Hall in the morning where New Cadets begin the fun.Closer is better since you will not be able to find parking on West Point itself. Newburgh is easy and only 20-25 minutes to Stony Lonesome Gate. A lot of serviceable hotel/motel options there. Once through Stony Lonesome Gate you’ll need another 15-20 minutes to park and take the bus down to Ike Hall.newburgh/ Fishkill is not a bad commute at all.
make sure you make time for Prima's Pizza in West Cornwall. It'll help your emotions
I stayed at Homewood Suite in Newburgh for R day in 2018. It was hot, the electricity was down that morning and we were stuck in the elevator. I was happy because it may be the sign for my DS not to attend USMA. But no, he had to pry open the elevator door instead of waiting for the first responders and the rest is the history. Since then I have visited WP about every 2 months. I found Nanuet is more convenient and much easier ride. Have not been back to Newburgh and not looking forward to it. If you choose Newburgh, please do your family a favor (less headaches) by not staying at Ramada on Route 300. We stayed there one night before moved into Homewood Suite and we were so glad that we stayed only one night. other parents had problems with that facility. Best wishes.New to West Point and need guidance on best place to stay for R Day. Looking at Newburgh or Fishkill Marriott properties. Any advice appreciated.
From my experience, family could stay any where with easy drive to WP on R day. But A day and PPW, staying at Thayer or the Five Stars Inn have more advantages. You can pick up or drop off your cadet in minutes and bad weather won't effect you. R Day, you don't pick up your cadet after 2 minutes warning. I was lucky to book Thayer for A day and building 785 ( under renovation currently)for PPW and comparing notes with other parents... we concluded staying close to the post make more sense and less stressful on those 2 occasions. All of us took our cadets to Nanuet or other places to eat and to shop. They fell asleep in the car and at the hotel. They even fell asleep while waiting for food. Since they would not spend the night with family they did not mind that we stayed so close to WP. Especially they didn't have to stand outside for 20-30 minutes in the rain/snow waiting for parents to pick them up.I just booked the Thayer. There aren't any rooms available on website; but if you call, they have rooms. VERY pricey, BUT being that R-Day is going to be very stressful for the cadets and families, I felt the convenience of the location was worth it. When we come back for A-Day, will stay someplace else.
Some Cadets really want to get away from the West Point area for A-Day. Check with yours. From my experience, family could stay any where with easy drive to WP on R day.
