HBO's "Generation Kill" mini-series will air starting this Sunday, July 13. I read the book...brutal, raw language and all...and will be watching on Sunday. The TV series and Evan Wright's book is about a Marine Recon unit's role in the first days of the Iraq War.

Here is what NPR has to say about it:

I'll watch it eventually, so long as it hasn't been turned into the typical liberal anti-military, anti-America, anti-Bush diatribe they usually serve up as "entertainment".

Good grief, they even managed to ruin "The Andromeda Strain"!

I watched the first episode and I rarely watch television. It was amusing, especially the dialogue. I didn't read the book so it's all new to me.

The book, Generation Kill is descriptive but if you want more detail and better prose then read LT Fick's version of the same events: One Bullet Away.

I wanted to wait for a few episodes before making any comment. The director did great work with "The Wire". His work tended to "Liberal" or "Progressive" Ideas being the solutions. Creating a "Little Amsterdam" in the center of Baltimores western district. The "Evil Republicans" holding money back from the Mayor who really knows how to fix things. The powerless cops trying to stem the rising flow of crime while their incompetent or corrupt leadership stops them at every turn.

Generation Kill uses the same formula. It is compelling drama, but it does a grave disservice to the Marines and anyone who has served in Iraq. It paints the Senior Officers, and SNCO's as incompetent. The freshly minted 2lt knows more and displays superior leadership to his Colonel, Major, and Capt. The Marine Sgt Major is portrayed as an utter imbecille obsessing about the "Grooming Standard".

This is all done with a purpose and a very disturbing one at that. The end purpose is to leave the public with the impression our military is broken and incapable of making responsible decisions. To portray the Soldiers as indiscriminate killers, who will only develop a concience when they return home and suffer PTSD.

If you think I'm angry your right. HBO should be ashamed, but they wouldn't know shame if it kicked the in the posterior.:unhappy:

I saw 2 episodes, so I'm working with incomplete data...but I did read the book.

Don't blame HBO, because that is how the book was written!

If that was how that unit was, it was pretty messed up (especially in senior leadership). I guess I'll have to read the LT's account.

good grief...there's no such thing as "real" when hollywood gets a hold of it so im not surprised one bit. if that's the way the book was written, shame on the author as well.
